Campbell defeats Rider in eight innings, 13-3

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell baseball took game three in the series against Rider in run-rule fashion, outscoring the Broncs 13-3 in eight innings.

The Broncs (2-1) scored three runs in the top of the first inning to chase Campbell's (2-5) starter early on, but the bullpen shut down the Rider offense the rest of the way.

Six of the first seven batters for Rider reached safely in that inning, but Jackson Roberts came out of the bullpen for the Camels and struck out the final two batters with the bases loaded to stop the damage.

The Campbell offense came alive with four runs of their own in the second inning, highlighted by RBI hits from Jackson Thompson, Joey Morton and Jett Music.

Roberts (1-0) continued his strong performance on the mound for 4.2 innings of work. He struck out five batters with only one walk, and he allowed four hits but no runs.

Lleyton Grubich pitched the final three innings for the Camels, striking out one of the 11 batters he faced.

The offense continued with one run in the third, an RBI single from Darnell Parker Jr. After being quieted in the fourth and fifth innings, the Camels scored eight runs in the last three innings.

In the sixth, Morton hit a solo home run to right field that traveled 394 feet.

The seventh inning saw the Camels score two runs by way of bases-loaded hit-by-pitches. On the day, CU batters drew six walks and were hit seven times. Morton secured another RBI with a sac fly to left, scoring Dalen Thompson.

Campbell clinched the run-rule victory with four runs in the eighth inning. The Camels loaded the bases with no outs, and a wild pitch scored Andrew Schuldt. Two consecutive walks brought in the second run of the frame.

J. Thompson got his third RBI of the day with a single to right, and Andrew Keller closed it out with a sac fly to left, bringing D. Thompson across the plate to end the game.
