Campbell upsets No. 17 Duke at home for second straight season

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell's offense erupted early, and their pitching held on late in a 9-6 win over No. 17 Duke Tuesday night at Jim Perry Stadium.

The team wore special edition "Nobodies from Nowhere" jerseys, which are now available in a public auction, here. The auction will run for two days.

The Camels (3-5) scored seven runs over the first four innings to build a 7-1 lead over the Blue Devils (4-4), and Bryce Schares pitched a shutout in the eighth and ninth innings to stop a Duke offense making a late surge.

Jonah Oster started the scoring with a solo home run in the first inning off Duke starter Andrew Healy. The long ball was Oster's second home run of the season.

Mason Smith started on the mound for Campbell, and he pitched 5.1 innings with eight strikeouts and just one walk, earning his first win of the season.

Smith's eight strikeouts led the Camels, who had a season-high 15 as a group. The team also tied their best offensive output of the young year with 12 hits.

Duke tied the game with an RBI single from Tyler Albright in the top of the second, but that's when Campbell's offense came alive with four runs in the bottom of the frame.

With two outs and two on, Jett Music drew a walk to load the bases. Darnell Parker Jr. singled to left, driving in Dalen Thompson and Joey Morton.

Oster followed that with a hit-by-pitch to load the bases yet again. That was the final action from Healy, who now has a 0-1 record on the year.

After the Blue Devils brought Ryan Calvert out of the bullpen, Andrew Schuldt laced another single to left, bringing home Music and Parker Jr.

The Camels added another in the third when Jackson Thompson led off the frame with a double to right. He advanced to third on a groundout and came around to score on a wild pitch.

Schuldt recorded his third RBI of the day in the fourth inning, when he doubled off the wall in center field, scoring Parker Jr.

Schuldt led the team with three RBI, and Parker Jr. had a strong outing in the leadoff spot, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.

The scoring outburst from Campbell paired with a strong three innings from Smith. In the third, fourth and fifth innings, he held the Blue Devils to one total baserunner.

Duke began applying pressure to the Camels with two runs in the sixth inning. Ben Miller knocked an RBI double to left field. He advanced to third on an ensuing groundout and scored when Jake Berger reached on an error by the Campbell infield.

Ethan Snyder came in from the bullpen, and he walked the next two batters before being replaced by Music, who started the game in left field.

Music forced a fly out and struck out pinch hitter Sam Harris to leave the bases loaded and limit the damage to two runs.

CU immediately got those two runs back in the bottom of the frame with a bases loaded sacrifice fly from D. Thompson, followed by an RBI groundout from Morton.

Music stayed on the mound in the seventh inning, when the Blue Devils scored three more runs. AJ Gracia had an RBI single to center field, and Jake Hyde scored two more on a bases loaded single to right center.

In total, the Blue Devils had five different batters record two hits.

Schares replaced Music, who returned to left field, on the mound to start the eighth inning. Schares allowed two baserunners in the frame but struck out the side to keep the Blue Devils at bay.

In the ninth inning, Schares loaded the bases with one out before striking out pinch hitter Nick DiPietrantonio and leadoff batter Wallace Clark to end the game, securing his first save of the season.
