Camels set for CAA Championship

No.3 Campbell set to play winner of No. 6 Elon/No. 11 Towson on Friday night

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell is set to compete in the 2025 Credit Union 1 CAA Championship on Friday at 8:30 PM. Seeded third, the Fighting Camels earned a double-bye into the quarterfinal round and will play the winner of No. 6 Elon and No. 11 Towson on Friday night.

A PROGRAM BUILT ON DEFENSE

  • Campbell is the only program in the nation to be ranked in the top-25 in scoring defense in each of the past eight seasons
  • In the Ronny Fisher era (since 2016-17) Campbell has held 42 opponents to 40 points or less and 109 opponents to 50 points or less
  • This season Campbell ranks:
    • 58th nationally and 4th in the CAA in scoring defense (58.5 PPG allowed)
    • 122nd nationally and 6th in the CAA in field goal percentage defense (39.5%)
    • 22nd nationally and 4th in the CAA giving up just 13.7 fouls per game
  • Last season Campbell ranked:
    • 8th nationally and 1st in the CAA in scoring defense (55.1 PPG allowed)
    • 31st nationally in field goal percentage defense (37.1%)
    • 10th nationally in three-point percentage defense (26.5%)
    • 23rd nationally giving up only 13.8 fouls per game

CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT HISTORY

  • Campbell is seeking its third conference tournament title overall and first since winning the ASUN Championship in 1999-00
  • The Camels earned its only NCAA Tournament bid in 2000, falling to 2-seed Duke in the first round, 71-42. Campbell also claimed the 1988-89 Big South tournament title, winning three games in three days after being seeded third
  • CU has finished as tournament runners-up in three Big South tournaments (2019, 2021 and 2022)
  • Campbell last earned a postseason tournament berth in 2021-22, automatically qualifying for the WNIT after winning the Big South regular season title
  • Coach Fisher is 9-7 in conference tournaments with Campbell
  • Last season the Camels, seeded eighth, went 1-1 in the CAA Championship last season. Campbell earned a 67-52 over No. 9 Elon before falling to top-seeded Stony Brook, 61-52

CAA POSTSEASON HONORS

LAST TIME OUT

  • Campbell closed out the regular season with a 73-55 win over William & Mary on Senior Day
  • Jasmine Felton recorded her first career double-double posting a team-best 16 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Olivia Tucker added 15 points, while Gemma Nunez and Gigi Boone scored 10 points each
  • Campbell led 43-35 at halftime and limited the Tribe to just 10 points in both the third and fourth quarters

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS

  • No. 11 seed Towson finished the regular season 10-19 overall and 8-10 in CAA play. The Tigers defeated No. 14 Northeastern on Wednesday and will play No. 6 Elon for a chance to play the Camels 
  • Towson leads the CAA averaging 25.0 bench points per game
  • India Johnston leads Towson averaging 12.1 points per game while CAA All-Rookie Team selection Khady Leye averages 10.1 points and 7.0 boards
  • No. 6 Elon wrapped up the regular season at 15-14 overall and 9-9 in conference play
  • Raven Preston, who earned a spot on the All-CAA Second Team, averages 12.2 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.9 steals
  • Rookie of the Year and Sixth Player of the Year Jayda Angel averages 10.0 points and 1.8 steals per game off the bench

SERIES HISTORY

  • Campbell is 6-1 all-time against Towson
  • The Camels met Towson once during the regular season, completing a 13-point comeback with 6:13 to go in the fourth quarter for a 58-57 win on Feb. 28. Olivia Tucker led the Camels with 16 points and scored or assisted on the final eight points of the game
  • Towson's lone win in the series came in the 1994 Big South tournament
  • Campbell leads the all-time series against Elon, 21-12
  • Campbell and Elon also met just once during the regular season with the Camels winning 48-45. Trailing 38-34 after three quarters, Campbell held Elon scoreless for the first 8:31 of the fourth quarter to fuel the comeback win
  • Campbell and Elon met in the second round of the CAA Championship last season - a 67-52 win for the Camels

THAT'S OUR POINT GUARD

  • Gemma Nunez ranks 6th nationally and 1st in the CAA averaging 6.3 assists overall and 50th nationally/1st in the CAA with a 2.11 assist/turnover ratio
  • Additionally, Nunez ranks 79th nationally/3rd in the CAA averaging 2.2 steals per game
  • Nunez is also averaging 7.8 points and ranks second on the team with 5.0 rebounds per game
  • Nunez is one of five players in the country to average 5.0 or more points, rebounds and assists along with more than 2.0 steals per game (Kitty Henderson, Columbia; Megan McConnell, Duquesne; Haven Ford, Murray St.; Ally Becki, Ball St.)
  • Nunez has dished out 10+ assists four times this season, including a career-high 12 at Stony Brook
  • She recorded her first career double-double with 11 pts and 11 assists against Monmouth and had her second double-double of the year with 16 points and 10 rebounds in a win at North Carolina A&T
  • Nunez has also dished out nine assists five times 
  • The Spaniard was named CAA Player of the Week (Feb. 9) after leading the Camels to wins over Northeastern and NC A&T

FELTON ONE OF THE BEST FROM TWO

  • Freshman guard Jasmine Felton is leads the country shooting 70.2 percent (80-of-114) from two (~100 or more attempts & excluding games against non Division-I teams)

CARDIAC CAMELS

  • Campbell has two double-digit fourth quarter comeback wins this season and four fourth-quarter comebacks by five points or more this season
  • The Camels trailed by as many as 15 points in the second half and erased a 13-point deficit to start the fourth quarter in a 71-67 overtime win over Purdue Fort Wayne on Nov. 27
  • Campbell erased a 13-point deficit with 6:13 remaining to defeat Towson on Feb. 28
  • Both wins are tied for the second-largest 4Q comeback in program history (15 pts at High Point, 2019-20)

  • Campbell has surpassed both its CAA win total (9) and overall win total (17) from last season
  • Five of Campbell's 10 CAA wins have been by 20 or more points including a 30-point win over Hampton and a 40-point win over Northeastern

  • Campbell posted a 12-2 record in home games this season, tied for the fifth-best mark in program Division-I history (since 1986-87)
  • The Camels outscored foes by 18.0 points at Gore Arena, shooting 42.8 percent from the field while holding foes to 35.9 percent shooting
  • Opposing teams averaged 18.6 turnovers and were outscored 259-160 overall in the fourth quarter
  • Campbell's 10-0 start at home this season matched the longest undefeated streak in the Ronny Fisher era along with the 2019-20 Big South regular season champion Camels who also started 10-0 and finished 12-2 at home
  • The Camels have won four CAA home games by 20 or more points including a 40-point win  (81-41) over Northeastern and a 30-point win (72-42) over Hampton

FIVE-GAME ROAD WIN STREAK

  • After starting 0-9 away from home, Campbell rattled off five straight road wins to close out the regular season
  • It marks the longest road win streak since the 2021-22 season
  • Campbell held foes to 55.4 points per game during the streak
  • Campbell became the only CAA team to defeat both North Carolina A&T and Drexel on its home floors this season

MULTIPLE 20-PLUS SCORERS

  • Four different Camels - Olivia Tucker, Courtney Dahlquist, Gianni Boone and Ciara Alexander - have scored 20 points or more this season
  • Tucker dropped 20-plus points in back-to-back games, scoring 24 (the most by a Camel this season) against ETSU while scoring 20 at Miami
  • Dahlquist dropped 20+ points in consecutive games during CAA play, scoring a career-high 21 points against Stony Brook and pouring in 20 points behind a career-best 6 three-pointers
  • The team's leading scorer, Gianni Boone has three 20-point outings this season
  • Boone has scored 21 points against Western Carolina and Stony Brook and dropped 20 points and added 10 boards against UNCW. Boone has scored in double-figures 15 times overall
  • Boone and Dahlquist became the first CU duo to each have 20 or more points in a game since Shy Tuelle (21) and Caroline Bowns (20) accomplished the feat against Hampton on March 14, 2019
  • Alexander became the latest Camel to score 20 points in a game, notching a career-best 20 points in 24 minutes off the bench against Northeastern. A freshman, Alexander made 7-of-11 field goals and went 6-of-7 from the charity stripe

TOP TRIO OF FRESHMEN

  • Campbell boasts the best trio of freshmen in the CAA in Olivia Tucker, Jasmine Felton and Ciara Alexander this season with all three earning CAA weekly honors multiple times. Felton and Alexander also both earned All-CAA Rookie Team honors
  • Olivia Tucker is one of the top scoring options for the Camels off the bench, averaging 8.6 points per game on the season
  • Tucker was named CAA Player of the Week after scoring 20+ points in consecutive games against ETSU (24) and Miami (20). The Durham, N.C. native has also earned CAA Rookie of the Week honors once this season as well
  • Jasmine Felton is a three-time CAA Rookie of the Week, averaging 8.8 points, a team-high 5.5 rebounds and 1.4 steals all while shooting a team-best 53.4 percent from the field
  • Ciara Alexander averages 8.8 points along with 4.4 boards - all while playing just 15.7 minutes off the bench
  • Alexander has scored in double-figures in 10 of 18 CAA games and has been named CAA Rookie of the Week twice

DAHLQUIST FROM DEEP

  • Senior forward Courtney Dahlquist ranks 3rd in the CAA shooting 36.5 percent from behind the arc
  • Her 54 threes this season ranks 5th in the CAA
  • Dahlquist scored a career-best 21 points in 27 minutes, connecting on 5-of-8 threes at Stony Brook
  • She followed up that game with another 20 point outing against Monmouth, making a career-high 6 three-pointers

HOMEGROWN TALENT

  • Campbell enters the 2024-25 season as one of six D-I programs without a transfer (from any level) on its roster for a second-straight season (Air Force, Brown, Cornell, Princeton, South Dakota St.)

HEAD COACH RONNY FISHER

  • A three-time Big South Coach of the Year, Ronny Fisher enters his ninth season at the helm of Campbell women's basketball and 17th as a head coach overall
  • Over the previous eight seasons, Campbell has won 152 games for an average of 19 wins per season (152-90)
  • Fisher enters the 2024-25 season with 249 career wins (249-234), which ranks 2nd most amongst active CAA coaches trailing only Charleston's Robin Harmony with 317 wins (317-183)
  • Under Fisher, the Camels claimed the 2019-20 and 2021-22 Big South regular season titles and finished as Big South tournament runners-up in 2019, 2021 and 2022
  • Fisher has also led Campbell to its first-ever WNIT berth in 2021-22 along with two other postseason appearances in the WBI. He helped the Camels claim their first ever postseason win in the 2019 WBI
