BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell won both games of the doubleheader to win the series against UConn, 7-6 and 8-5, Saturday at Jim Perry Stadium.
Â
Charlie Meglio provided the walk-off hit in the 10
th inning of game one, and a six-run sixth put the Camels ahead for good in the second contest of the day.
Â
Campbell now sits at 8-11 after the two wins, while UConn falls to 6-10.
Â
Game 1
Meglio provided the heroics in the first game of the day with his walk-off RBI single in the 10
th inning.
Dalen Thompson led off the inning with a double, and a walk from
Andrew Schuldt and intentional walk to
Joey Morton loaded the bases with one out before Meglio sent a ground ball through the left side of the infield to win the game, 7-6.
Â
The scoring started early, as both teams scored two runs in the first inning. Campbell starter
Mason Smith retired the first two batters before walking the next two, with Ryan Daniels advancing to third on a wild pitch.
Â
Aidan Dougherty followed with an RBI single, and Sam Biller reached on a fielding error from the Campbell infield. With the bases loaded, Carter Groen was hit by a pitch to bring home the second run.
Â
The Camels brought home two runs in the bottom of the frame to even the score.
Darnell Parker Jr. and
Dalen Thompson led off by both getting on base, and
Jonah Oster hit a sacrifice fly to left to bring home the first run.
Â
With two outs,
Joey Morton hit a single through the right side, and Thompson came home to score from second base.
Â
The Huskies added two runs in the second and one in the third, all unearned, to take a 5-2 lead.
Â
Smith pitched four innings for Campbell, striking out four while allowing three hits. Only one of the five runs scored on him was earned, and he was given a no decision after the Camels scored three runs in the fourth to tie the game.
Â
Ben Karpowicz led off the frame with a solo home run to left center, his first of the season. The next three batters reached base safely to load the bases with no outs.
Â
UConn starter Tommy Ellisen faced the first two batters in the frame before being relieved by Thomas Galusha. He faced three batters before being replaced by Greg Shaw III.
Â
With the bases loaded, Oster drew a hit-by-pitch and
Andrew Schuldt walked to tie the game. Two strikeouts and a force out at home ended the inning with three runners on base for CU.
Â
Evans Hendricks relieved Smith to start the fifth inning. Daniels led off the frame with a triple for UConn, and Dougherty scored him on a sacrifice bunt to put the Huskies ahead again, 6-5.
Â
The Camels tied it once again in the eighth inning.
Lukas Schramm and Parker Jr. led off the inning with two four-pitch walks, and D. Thompson brought Schramm home on a single through the left side.
Â
The Camels went on to load the bases with no outs, but two strikeouts and a fielder's choice out at the plate ended the inning with no more damage done.
Â
Hendricks's day ended with 4.0 innings pitched with four strikeouts and three hits to go with just the single run scored.
Â
With the game tied entering the ninth inning,
Bryce Schares came to the mound for Campbell. He allowed two walks, but no hits and no runs in the ninth and 10
th inning to earn his first win of the season.
Â
UConn's Brady Afthim was credited with the loss after earning the save for the Huskies on Friday night. His season record is now 1-1 with one save. Â
Â
CU led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a double from
Jett Music, but two strikeouts and a pop up kept him on the bases.
Â
Game 2
The Camels clinched the series win in the rubber match on the back of a strong performance on the mound from
David Rossow and a six-run sixth inning.
Â
Rossow (2-2) earned the win after throwing six innings with seven strikeouts, three hits and five runs, four of which were earned.
Â
Ian Cooke (0-4) was given the loss for UConn, as he was responsible for the go-ahead run in the sixth. He pitched 2.2 innings in relief of starter Cayden Suchy, who went 5.1 innings with four strikeouts, five hits and five runs.
Â
UConn once again scored two runs in the first inning, this time on a defensive miscue from the Camels and an RBI groundout by Sam Biller.
Â
A fielding error by the Huskies allowed one Campbell run to score in the fifth to make it 2-1, before UConn scored three in the top of the sixth to make it 5-1. Of UConn's five runs in game two on the day, each runner who scored initially reached base on a walk or a hit-by-pitch.
Â
The Camels responded with six runs of their own to take a 7-5 lead. Parker Jr. and D. Thompson led off the inning with back-to-back singles, and Oster moved them up with a sac bunt.
Â
On a 2-2 count, Schuldt singled between the third baseman and shortstop to score both runners, and he then came around to score on a double off the wall in right center from Morton.
Â
Cooke replaced Suchy after the Morton double, and he walked his first batter before giving up an RBI single to
Jackson Thompson, followed by an RBI double from Meglio and a sac fly from
Seth Farni before recording the final out of the inning.
Â
Peyton Brown came out of the bullpen for the final three innings, and he was awarded his first save of the season. Brown allowed the leadoff man to reach in each frame but was able to record three consecutive outs to the subsequent batters, and no runner advanced past second base against him.
Â
CU added one insurance run in the eighth inning on a well-executed hit-and-run. The first two batters recorded outs before Farni worked a four-pitch walk. Schramm replaced him at first, and with a 1-2 count on Parker Jr., he broke for second on the pitch.
Â
Parker Jr. made contact and sent a ground ball to the space the second baseman had vacated to cover Schramm at second. Schramm never stopped running and made it all the way home to score on the play.
Â
The Camels end their weekend non-conference slate with two series wins.
