Texas State evens series against Campbell

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Texas State Bobcats evened the series against Campbell with a 9-3-win Saturday afternoon at Jim Perry Stadium.

The Campbell (5-10) pitching staff recorded 12 strikeouts, but four errors from the defense resulted in five unearned runs for Texas State (8-6), who also had eight hits on the day.

Alex Valentin got the win on the mound for Texas State, going 6.1 innings with seven strikeouts and two hits while being responsible for all three of Campbell's runs. His record is now 3-0 on the year.

Jackson Roberts was given his first loss of the year, and he now holds a 2-1 record. He pitched 4.1 innings with seven strikeouts and five hits. He allowed six runs, only three of which we earned.

The Bobcats opened the scoring with four runs in the second inning. The first two batters reached safely, then Ethan Farris hit a ground ball that was misplayed by Campbell's third baseman. Each runner advanced two bases, including Ian Collier scoring from second base.

Chase Mora was next to bat, and he hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Cole Tabor. Samson Pugh and Ryne Farber came after what would have been the third out, each recording RBI hits.

Evans Hendricks came on in relief of Roberts in the fourth inning, and he finished 4.0 innings while allowing only three hits and one earned run. He struck out five batters and pitched just 49 pitches in the four innings.

Texas State added two more runs to take a 6-0 lead by way of solo home runs in the third and fourth innings. Collier hit the ball to left center in the third, followed by Mora's shot to center in the top of the fourth.

Collier was the lone Bobcat to record multiple hits, going 2-for-5 at the plate.

Campbell's first hit and baserunner came in the fifth inning, as Joey Morton hit a solo home run over the wall in center field. Lukas Schramm made his return to the lineup after being injured against UC Santa Barbara to start the year, and he was hit by a pitch to get on base in his pinch-hit at-bat.

The Camels added their final two runs in the seventh inning by taking advantage of some miscues from the Bobcats pitching. Andrew Schuldt doubled to lead off the frame, and Jackson Thompson was hit by a pitch before Bryson Dudley replaced Valentin on the mound.

Schuldt, who had advanced to third on a flyout from Joey Morton, came around to score on a wild pitch from Dudley. Two two-out walks by Dudley loaded the bases, and he hit Darnell Parker Jr. on a 1-1 count to bring home another run. Parker Jr. currently leads the CAA in hit-by-pitches with nine.

Texas State added three insurance runs in the top of the eighth of an RBI double from Farris, and two more unearned runs scored when the Campbell infield could not field a groundball from Mora.

Drew Siegner came to the mound with one out in the ninth and runners at second and third. After walking the first batter he faced, he induced a 6-4-3 double play to prevent any more runs from the Bobcats.

Matthew Tippie came on the mound with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to go 1.1 innings, and Carson Laws pitched the final frame for Texas State. Each pitcher allowed just one hit.
