Campbell falls to Stony Brook to open series

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Campbell dropped the first game of its weekend series against Stony Brook, 5-4, Friday afternoon at Joe Nathan Field.

The Seawolves (16-15, 4-6 CAA) scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to erase a two-run deficit to the Camels (14-18, 5-5).

Each team used two pitchers, and both relievers earned the decisions. Jacob Pedersen earned his first win of the year with a 5.1 inning effort for the Seawolves. Evans Hendricks was credited with the loss for Campbell after giving up the go-ahead run. He's now 1-3 on the year.

Darnell Parker Jr. started off the game with a first-pitch home run over the left field wall, his third of the season. Dalen Thompson followed with an infield single, and Charlie Meglio doubled to left to keep the rally going.

Joey Morton brought Thompson home to score on an RBI groundout to first. Meglio was tagged out on a fielder's choice the next at-bat, and a flyout to left ended the frame before the Camels could do more damage.

In his first weekend start of the season, Peyton Brown worked a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the first on just five pitches. He then retired the first two Seawolves batters in the second inning before hitting the third, but he followed that with a groundout to shortstop to prevent any rally.

The Camels scored one more run in the fourth inning off SBU starter Eddie Smink. Jett Music singled to center field, then he advanced to second on a groundout and to third on a flyout. Joe Simpson brought him the rest of the way with a single through the left side of the infield.

Stony Brook added two runs in the fourth inning to cut into the deficit. Chanz Doughty hit a sacrifice fly to right field, and Johnny Pilla followed that with an RBI single for the second run of the inning.

Campbell added one more to their lead in the sixth inning with a leadoff solo home run from Thompson, his third of the year.

Hendricks entered for Brown with one out in the bottom of the sixth. He allowed an infield single to load the bases before inducing a 6-4-3 double play to get out of the jam.

Stony Brook took the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh inning with three runs. A walk and an error put the first two batters on base, then they advanced to second and third on a sac bunt.

Pinch-hitter Scott Gell singled to center field, scoring both runners. Cam Santerre entered as a pinch runner and stole second before coming around to score on an RBI single from Erik Paulsen.

Music recorded a two-out single in the eighth inning, but he was the only baserunner in the final two frames for the Camels.
