STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Campbell dropped the series against Stony Brook, falling 5-1 on Saturday afternoon at Joe Nathan Field.
The Seawolves (17-15, 5-6 CAA) got on the board early with two runs in the first inning and never looked back against the Camels (14-20, 5-6), who have now lost six of their last seven games.
Ty Panariello (4-0) earned the win for SBU, going 7.2 innings with one run, two hits and four strikeouts.
Mason Smith (1-3) started for Campbell and was credited with the loss. He pitched four innings and allowed five runs (four earned) and six hits with five strikeouts and three walks.
Erik Paulsen worked a one out walk in the bottom of the first inning, then came around to score on a Nico Azpilcueta triple in the gap in right center field. He then scored on an RBI groundout to first from Chanz Doughty.
The Seawolves added another run in the third off Smith. Nick Zampeiron reached on an infield single, then advanced to second on a throwing error. Paulsen brought him around to score with an RBI double to center, putting SBU up 3-0.
Azpilcueta added the final two runs in the fifth with a two-run homer, scoring Paulsen. The duo scored four of the five runs for SBU.
After allowing the home run, Smith walked Doughty before being replaced on the mound by
Lleyton Grubich. Grubich finished the final 4.0 innings of the game with four strikeouts and no walks. He allowed two hits but faced the minimum thanks to one pick off and a caught stealing.
The Camels scored their lone run in the eighth inning. Two walks put runners on first and second with two outs, and
Charlie Meglio delivered a single to bring home
Joe Simpson.
After Meglio's RBI single, George Adams replaced Panariello on the mound and worked a ground ball from
Joey Morton to strand two runners on base. Adams pitched the final 1.1 innings for Stony Brook. He allowed one hit, but did not allow any more runs to come across.
