Camels open series with win over Tigers

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell took game one of its three-game series against Towson behind four RBI from Dalen Thompson in the 9-5 decision Friday night at Jim Perry Stadium.

The Camels improved to 17-23 and 8-8 in CAA play, while the Tigers now sit at 13-29 (5-11).

Thompson was 3-3 with a home run and three runs scored before he had to exit the game with an apparent injury while running the bases.

Peyton Brown started on the mound and earned the win, moving his record to 3-2. Starter Andrew Luczak pitched 1.2 innings for Towson and was credited with the loss after giving up five runs. His record on the year is now 2-4.

Evans Hendricks worked four innings of relief for the Camels, earning his first save of the season.

Towson got on the board in each of the first two innings, but the team could not put any distance between itself and Campbell. Brian Heckelman knocked a sacrifice fly to foul territory in left field to score Jordan Peyton in the first inning.

In the second frame, the Tigers scored on an RBI single by Ethan Brand and a sac fly from Josh Janove.

Campbell equalized with one run of their own in the bottom of the first. With runners on first and second and one out, Charlie Meglio laced a single through the left side, scoring Thompson from second.

The Camels took the lead for good with four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Jackson Thompson beat the infield shift and sneaked a single through the right side of the infield, allowing Jett Music to score after leading off the inning with a double.

Darnell Parker Jr. worked a walk to get on base before D. Thompson hit his three-run shot over the wall in right center field.

CU scored another three runs in the bottom of the third, thanks to RBI hits from Parker Jr. and D. Thompson, as well as a sac fly from Joey Morton.

Brown followed up Campbell's big offensive innings with scoreless frames in the third and fourth. Heckelman knocked a two-run homer over the left field wall for what would be Towson's final runs of the night.

Hendricks entered as the book changed to the sixth inning, and he allowed just one hit and one walk over the final four innings. He and Brown combined for 10 strikeouts and two walks in the first game of the series.

Campbell's final run came in the sixth inning when freshman DH Andrew Keller singled to left center, bringing home Andrew Schuldt after he led off the frame with a double of his own.

Meglio had his third hit of the day in the eighth inning, a double down the left field line. He was the only baserunner for the Camels after Keller's RBI in the sixth.

With the win, Campbell is now in a three-way tie for fifth place in the CAA standings with Stony Brook and N.C. A&T.
