Smith’s complete game shutout lifts Campbell over Towson to claim series

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell pitcher Mason Smith threw a complete game shutout and allowed just three hits, as the Camels claimed the series with a 10-0 win in seven innings over Towson Saturday afternoon at Jim Perry Stadium.

This is the first time since Thomas Harrington in 2021 that a Campbell pitcher has thrown a CG shutout, when he threw nine innings and allowed only one hit against USC Upstate.

Smith ended his day with six strikeouts and two walks to go along with the three hits. Two double plays and a caught stealing helped limit the potential damage from the five baserunners, as Smith only faced two batters above the minimum. He now holds a 2-4 record on the year.

Campbell improved to 19-23 and 9-8 in CAA competition, while the Tigers now sit at 13-30 (5-12). Towson starter Max Simpson was credited with the loss, moving him to 2-8 this season.

The Campbell offense did their part with three home runs on the day. Darnell Parker Jr. was first to go long with his three-run homer in the third inning to start the scoring. Campbell added another two runs on an RBI single from Andrew Keller, and another run came across on the play thanks to an error by the right fielder.

Joe Simpson sent a two-run shot to left field in the bottom of the fourth, then Joey Morton went yard later in the inning with a solo home run to right. Simpson's home run forced the first pitching change for Towson, as they went to Jacob Whiteman.

Whiteman went 2.1 innings and allowed three runs. He was replaced with two outs in the bottom of the sixth by Henry Ortiz, who only needed one pitch to record what would be the final out for the Campbell offense.

The Tiger defense was unable to create any momentum against Smith. They had only one baserunner in the first five innings, a walk by Nich Francuzenko in the second.

Cole Stefano walked to lead off the sixth, but he was out on a double-play ball from Casey Bishop. Jordan Peyton followed that with the first hit of the game for Towson, but he was caught stealing in the next at-bat.

The first Towson batter to reach second base was Max D'Alessandro, as he and Josh Janove hit back-to-back singles in the top of the seventh with one out. The game ended on a 4-6-3 double play by the Campbell defense, leaving D'Alessandro stranded.

After a scoreless fifth inning, CU scored two runs in the sixth to create the 10-run advantage. With runners at second and third and one out, Andrew Schuldt grounded out to the second baseman for an RBI. Charlie Meglio followed that by reaching on an error by the third baseman, which allowed the final run to score.

Parker Jr. was hit by a pitch in the seventh inning, his league-leading 20th HBP this season. He's now one HBP away from entering the top 10 for a single season in Campbell history.
