Campbell falls to Northeastern, loses first conference series

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell's offense struggled again against Northeastern's pitching, falling 8-1 as the Huskies claimed the series Saturday afternoon at Jim Perry Stadium.

The Camels (13-17, 4-4 CAA) had six hits on the day, but only had multiple hits in one inning. Joey Morton had two hits, while Seth Farni batted in the lone run for CU.

Aiven Cabral had a strong start on the mound for Northeastern (21-8, 7-1 CAA), going 6.2 innings with five strikeouts, five hits and one run to earn his fourth win of the season (4-2).

His counterpart, Mason Smith (1-2), pitched 5.2 innings for Campbell. He gave up nine hits and seven runs (five earned), with five strikeouts and four walks.

Each team only used one pitcher out of the bullpen. Evans Hendricks threw the final 3.1 innings for Campbell, while Cooper McGrath closed the final 2.1 innings for the Huskies.

NU struck first with one run in the first inning. Cam Maldonado laced a one-out single, then advanced to second on a sac bunt. Harrison Feinberg scored Maldonado with a single up the middle.

Maldonado, the reigning CAA Player of the Week, helped lead the NU offense with two hits, two runs scored and one RBI.

The teams exchanged three up three down frames until Campbell recorded a single in the bottom of the second, but the runner was stranded at first.

The Huskies built their lead with three runs in the third. Carmelo Musacchia led off the inning with a double, but he was thrown out at third on a fielder's choice back to Smith off the bat of Maldonado. Maldonado eventually came around to score on an RBI single from Jack Doyle.

With the bases loaded and two outs, Gregory Bozzo singled to left field, scoring Doyle and Feinberg to put the Huskies up 4-0.

Maldonado added another run in the fourth with an RBI fielder's choice to bring home Henry DiGiorgio.

The offensive struggles persisted for Campbell. In each of the first six innings, the Camels sent just three or four batters to the plate.

The Huskies added two more runs in the sixth after an error extended the inning. Ryan Gerety worked a bases-loaded walk from Smith, then Feinberg did the same against Hendricks after the pitching change.

Campbell ended the shutout with Farni's RBI single to left in the seventh. With two outs and runners on first and second, he sent the ball over the shortstop's head to land in front of the left fielder, scoring Jett Music. McGrath replaced Cabral after the hit, and he forced a fly out to right to end the danger.

Both pitchers kept the opponent of the board in the eighth inning. Northeastern added their final run in similar fashion to last night's game, a solo home run in the ninth. Today's was off the bat of Doyle for his fourth of the season.

The Camels were unable to build off the action in the seventh, sending just four batters to the plate in the eighth and three in the ninth.
