Camels bounce back with most runs of season to beat Huskies

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Fighting Camels erupted for 17 hits and 18 runs against Northeastern Sunday afternoon to win the third game in the weekend set at Jim Perry Stadium, 18-8, in eight innings.

Andrew Schuldt led the team going 4-5 with five RBI, including his grand slam in a nine-run fourth inning for the Camels, who improved to 14-17 and 5-4 against Coastal Athletic Association competition. Charlie Meglio had two home runs for four RBI, and Seth Farni contributed three RBI on two hits.

Northeastern (21-9, 7-2 CAA) took a 6-2 lead after three with a six-spot in the third inning. A single, error and intentional walk loaded the bases for Ryan Gerety. He worked a full count walk to bring in the first run of the frame.

The next batter was Harrison Feinberg, and he sent the second pitch of his at-bat the opposite way over the wall in right field for a grand slam. Jack Doyle followed immediately with a solo shot to left field.

Northeastern did their damage against starter David Rossow. He was pulled after Doyle's home run, having gone 2.1 innings with three strikeouts, three walks and three hits. Five of the six runs we allowed were earned.

Jett Music replaced Rossow on the mound, and he faced three batters and recorded one out before being replaced by Lleyton Grubich.

With runners on the corners, Grubich induced a groundout from Henry DiGiorgio to end the inning and limit the damage.

Grubich would go on to earn the win for Campbell, moving his record to 2-1. He pitched 3.1 innings, the most of the five pitchers used on the day.

Jordan Gottesman of NU was credited with the loss, and he now sits at 3-2 after he was responsible for the go-ahead run in the fourth inning.

Campbell got on the board first with a bases-loaded walk from Jackson Thompson in the second inning, then Schuldt's first RBI came in the bottom of the third when he sent an RBI single to left to score Dalen Thompson.

J. Thompson was the only Campbell starter to not record a hit, but he contributed in other ways, earned one walk and two hit-by-pitches.

The Camels opened the floodgates in the fourth inning, when the first eight batters safely reached base. Seth Farni was hit by the first pitch of the frame by NU starter Jack Bowery. Charlie Meglio singled, then J. Thompson was hit by the first pitch of his at-bat to load the bases.

Gottesman replaced Bowery after that, but he hit Darnell Parker Jr. to bring home Farni. Joe Simpson and D. Thompson followed with back-to-back RBI singles, scoring one run apiece and keeping the bases loaded.

Joey Morton worked a four-pitch walk for the fourth run of the inning. Schuldt followed him, and he sent the 2-2 pitch over the wall in left field to clear the bases and make it eight runs in the frame, all with no outs. It was the second grand slam of the year for Campbell, and it gave them a 10-6 advantage.

The next two batters struck out, but Meglio homered in his second at-bat of the inning, sending the ball 446 feet to left field for the final run of the frame.

Both teams added multiple runs in the sixth inning. Carmelo Musacchia had an RBI groundout, and Cam Maldonado followed with an RBI single to give the Huskies two runs in the frame.

The Camels responded with four runs of their own in the home half. Morton and Schuldt led off the inning with a pair of singles on NU pitcher Jack Beauchesne, and Morton came around to score on an RBI double from Farni. Following Farni, Meglio knocked his second home run of the day to left for a three-run shot.

Grubich faced two batters in the top of the seventh inning, walking Jack Doyle and hitting Will Fosberg before being replaced by Zach Sabers. He struck out Matt Brinker and forced a short fly out to left from Gregory Bozzo for the first two outs. Digiorgio hit an infield single, but a running mistake from the Huskies allowed CU to get Doyle out on a play at the plate to end the inning.

The Fighting Camels added two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to induce the run rule. James Morice came in to pitch the seventh for Carson Walsh, and he gave up a two RBI double from Farni.

Bryce Schares pitched the top of the eighth for Campbell. He struck out Musacchia before walking Maldonado. He then forced two fly outs from Gerety and Feinberg to prevent more damage.

The final run of the game came off the bat of D. Thompson against NU reliever Ryan Griffin. Griffin allowed a single to Parker Jr. to lead off the home half of the eighth before walking the pinch hitter, Andrew Keller. Thompson sent the 1-2 pitch the other way through the right side of the infield, and Parker scored from second base to give the Camels the necessary 10-run advantage.
