Harris’s ninth inning grand slam lifts Blue Devils over Camels

DURHAM, N.C. – Duke right fielder Sam Harris hit a grand slam with two outs in the ninth inning to lift the Blue Devils over Campbell, 10-7, Wednesday night at Jack Coombs Field for their second walk-off win in two days.

The sophomore had four hits and five RBI on the day, including the walk-off knock. In total, Duke (23-12) scored eight runs in the final two innings against the Camels (14-18).

Charlie Meglio led the way for CU with his second consecutive multi-home run game. His five RBI is a new career high for the sophomore third baseman.

Bryce Schares gave up the Harris slam, moving his record to 1-1 on the year. Henry Zatkowski retired the three batters he faced in the ninth inning to give him his fourth win this season (4-1).

Jake Murray pitched a scheduled one inning to start the game. He allowed two baserunners, but they were stranded on second and third thanks to a nice catch in center field by Dalen Thompson, as he ranged to his left and caught Jake Hyde's fly ball on the run to end the inning.

The Fighting Camels opened the scoring in the second inning off the bat of Charlie Meglio. After Andrew Schuldt led off the inning with a walk, Meglio launched is third home run in two games over the wall in left for a two-run shot.

Following Murray, Campbell used a platoon of pitchers out of the bullpen. Zach Sabers came in for his scheduled inning of work in the bottom of the second. He allowed a single to Harris but needed just seven pitches to retire the side.

Sabers was followed by Jackson Roberts, David Rossow, Drew Siegner and Schares.

Duke also relied heavily on their bullpen, using eight pitchers throughout the game.

Campbell added another run in the third inning. Darnell Parker Jr. led off the frame with his second walk in as many at-bats, and he moved to second base on a groundout by Joe Simpson. Following Simpson, Thompson laced a single to center on a 1-1 count to score Parker from second.

Roberts came to the mound for CU to start the third inning. He retired the side in order during his first inning of work. The Blue Devils then got on the scoreboard with a two-run home run from Andrew Yu in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Duke threatened again with two walks in the fifth inning, but Rossow struck out Tyler Albright looking to prevent any damage.

The Camels extended their lead with four runs in the top of the sixth, again thanks to a three-run long ball from Meglio. He was preceded by a pair of walks from Joey Morton and Jett Music. Meglio's shot came with two outs, continuing Campbell's stretch of clutch production.

After Meglio, Seth Farni was hit by a pitch by Mark Hindy. Lukas Schramm was up next, and he snuck a ground ball just inside the third base bag for a double to score Farni from first base and put the Camels up by five runs.

Siegner was next on the mound for Campbell, and he worked a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the sixth with two strikeouts. In the seventh, he sandwiched a strikeout with a leadoff single and a walk to put two one with one out. Jake Berger laced a 98 mph ball right at Meglio, who knocked it down and started a 5-6-3 double play to get out of danger.

Duke added to their total in the bottom of the eighth, all with two outs, with a bases loaded single from Harris through the left side of the infield, scoring one. Another run came around to score on a passed ball, and one more on an RBI single from pinch hitter Noah Murray. A ground ball back to Schares from AJ Gracia ended the inning.

The Camels got a runner to second in the top of the ninth, but they were unable to add any insurance runs. Schares came back to the mound in the bottom of the frame to face the 2-3-4 hitters in the Blue Devil lineup.

In the final frame, Schares walked Berger before inducing a flyout from Ben Miller. Tyler Albright grounded into a fielder's choice for the second out, but Hyde followed with a single to put runners on first and second.

Macon Winslow scored the first run with an RBI single, and Yu worked a full-count walk to load the bases for Harris. After fouling back the first pitch of his at-bat, he sent the ball over the wall in left center to win the game.
