Camels defeat N.C. A&T 6-1, claim series

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Fighting Camels scored all six of their runs with two outs in the final three innings on Sunday afternoon, coming away with a 6-1 series-clinching victory against North Carolina A&T at War Memorial Stadium.

The six unanswered runs improved Campbell's record to 20-26 overall and 11-10 in CAA action. The Aggies saw their record drop to 15-31 (9-12).

Jackson Thompson tied the game with two outs in the top of the seventh, hitting his first home run of the season over the wall towards right center.

The Camels took the lead with three two-out runs in the eighth. Darnell Parker Jr. led off the frame with a single but was out on a double play ball hit by D. Thompson. Joey Morton worked a walk, then stole second base to get into scoring position.

Jonah Oster smacked his 0-2 pitch through the left side of the infield to bring Morton around. Lukas Schramm came to the plate next and launched a home run over the left field wall to put the Camels up, 4-1.

The Camels added their final two runs in the ninth inning. J. Thompson led off the frame with a HBP, then later Dalen Thompson hit a two-out home run over the opposite field in right-center.

Jake Murray started on the mound for Campbell, and Evan Hart started for N.C. A&T. Hart just went one inning before he was replaced by Jacob Halford, who was credited with the loss (1-5). Diego Barrett and Matt Murtagh also saw time out of the Aggie bullpen.

The teams remained scoreless through the first four innings. The Aggies loaded the bases with one out in the third, but Murray induced an infield pop-up and struck out Savoi Edwards to keep them off the board.

The Camels had one baserunner in each of the first four innings but couldn't string together enough production to bring any around to score.

A&T put on another two baserunners with one out in the fourth inning, but Murray forced a pop-up in foul territory by first base and a strikeout to once again get out of trouble.

The Camels put the pressure on in the top of the fifth with runners on first and second with no outs. A groundball fielder's choice got the first out followed by a double play kept CU off the board.

A&T scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. After Murray retired the first two batters, he induced a weak pop-up from Andrew Tinsley and two Camel defenders collided, jarring the ball out of the glove.

Tinsley stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before Edwards brought him home with an RBI double.

D. Thompson led off the top of the sixth with a single, then advanced to third before Halford recorded the last out of the frame.

Lleyton Grubich took the mound in relief of Murray to start the bottom of the sixth inning. Murray's day ended with four hits, one unearned run, three walks and six strikeouts. He allowed a two-out double to Jason Campo but no further damage.

David Rossow took the mound for Campbell in the bottom of the seventh and worked around a leadoff HBP, including a double play lineout, to get out of the inning. He earned the win on the day, moving his season tally to 4-3.

Nick Biasi and Peyton Brown, who both pitched on Friday night, combined to put up another zero in the eighth inning against the A&T offense.

The Aggies had two more baserunners in the ninth, but Bryce Schares left them stranded, recording a strikeout to end the game.
