Camels allow late surge, fall to No. 4 North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Campbell kept it close through the first five innings before ultimately falling to No. 4 North Carolina, 10-1, Tuesday night at Boshamer Stadium.

The Camels dropped to 20-27, while the Tar Heels improved to 36-10.

Starters Lleyton Grubich and Jason DeCaro pitched well early. Each faced the minimum through the first two innings. Each starter was the pitcher of record. Grubich falls to 2-3, and DeCaro moves to 7-3.

Andrew Keller was the first baserunner of the game, getting hit by a pitch in the top of the third. Lukas Schramm followed with the first hit of the game to put runners on first and second with one out, but DeCaro worked around the pressure with a strikeout and a flyout.

UNC answered with the first run of the game in the third inning. The first two batters reached base before Grubich struck out Carter French for the first out of the frame.

Next up was Kane Kepley, who hit a ground ball to the shortstop. The Camels got the out at second base, then an errant throw to first on the double play attempt allowed Alex Madera to come around and score.

David Rossow replaced Grubich on the mound after the score. Jackson Van De Brake sent a high ball towards short right field, just out of the reach of a diving Schramm for an RBI double to make it 2-0 before Rossow induced a flyout from Luke Stevenson to end the inning.

CU scored their run in the fifth inning with an RBI single from Joe Simpson. Andrew Schuldt led off the frame with a single, He then advanced to third on a hit-and-run play with Schramm, putting himself in position to score on the Simpson knock.

The Tar Heels regained their two-run advantage in the bottom of the fifth, thanks to a bases-loaded HBP from Stevenson. They tacked on two more in the sixth inning with a two-out two-run homer from Rom Kellis.

Ethan Snyder started the inning on the mound, and he was replaced by Zac Martin after a two-out single from French. Martin allowed a HBP before recording a groundout to end the inning.

UNC reliever Ryan Lynch entered the game after DeCaro threw the first five innings. Lynch retired the side in order in both the sixth and seventh innings.

North Carolina continued their scoring streak in the seventh with five runs. Madera cleared the bases with a bases-loaded double, then he came around to score himself with an RBI single from Kellis.

After stealing second base and advancing to third on a groundout, Kellis scored on a wild pitch to put the Tar Heels up 10-1 before the inning was over.

Martin started the inning on the mound for the Camels. He was replaced by Drew Siegner, who was in turn replaced by Jett Music.

Camron Seagraves and Music combined to throw six strikeouts in the eighth inning, sitting down all the batters that came to the plate in the top and bottom halves of the frame.

Cale Bolton pitched the ninth for the Tar Heels, and he retired the side in order to end the game.
