BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Ethan Roberts scored in his second consecutive match, and
Filipe Matos secured his first goal of the season, as the Fighting Camels came away with a 2-1 win over William & Mary in their first CAA action of the season, Friday night at Eakes Athletics Complex.
Â
Roberts gave Campbell (2-1) an early lead in just the second minute.
Marco Wright flashed down the right side and fired a shot on target, which was parried by the William & Mary (0-1-1) keeper. His stop deflected right into the path of Roberts, who headed it home into the unguarded net.
Â
Matos doubled the Campbell lead in the 31
st minute with a goal from outside the box.
Daniel Santos Rosa switched the field from the right side to Matos on the left just outside the box.
Â
Matos fired it towards goal with his left foot, and the ball started towards the middle of the goal before curling back out towards the upper left corner. Karan Sobti put forth a diving effort and got a hand on the ball, but he was unable to keep it out of the net.
Â
The Tribe's best chance in the first half came in the 44
th minute off a Campbell turnover. Gabe Ruitenberg intercepted a Campbell pass back towards the defense and carried it forward before sending a through ball to Aidan Morrison. Morrison received the pass at the top of the box and sent it towards goal, but
Max Leviton stayed big and recorded one of his four saves on the night.
Â
William & Mary found the back of the net in the 53
rd minute to draw within one. Sam Delgado was fouled just outside the penalty box in a dangerous area. He then took the free kick and shot it past the wall on frame where it was parried by Leviton. The ball did not clear the box, and Webb Kosich found his way on the end of it and cleaned it up for his fourth career goal.
Â
The visitors recorded four more shots before time expired, but the Campbell defense held their ground and blocked all four before they made it back to the goalkeeper.
Â
CU held the advantage in shots (13-10) and corner kicks (5-3). William & Mary received two yellow cards on the night, while the Camels were booked one time.
