WILLIAMSBURG, VA. – A balanced offensive effort guided the Camels to a 3-1 win over William & Mary in the first CAA match of the season.
The win moves Campbell to 9-3, 1-0 on the year while the Tribe drop to 5-7, 0-1.
Four Camels logged double-figure kills for the first time since doing so against Radford on Nov. 5, 2022 in a five-set match.
Gwen Wolkow paced the effort with 15 kills, while
Victoria Tupy tallied 14 on a team-best .379 hitting.
Maja Daca and
Abbie Tuyo notched 12 and 10 kills, respectively.
Aley Clent reached 300 career blocks during the match, the ninth Camel in program history to reach the milestone.
The Camels came out hot, hitting a blistering .433 in the opening frame to roll to a 25-15 first set victory. The attack committed to just errors in the first frame, while holding the Tribe to .172.
Campbell raced out to a 10-2 lead to begin the second set and would not relinquish the lead in a 25-18 set win. The defense controlled the second set and held W&M to only seven kills while forcing seven errors for a flat .000 hitting for the hosts.
The Tribe kept things going with a 25-21 win in the third set. Campbell rallied from down six at 20-14 to make it a one-point game, but never drew even as W&M rattled off three in a row late to take the set.
Campbell got back on track in the fourth set and hit .382 along with four service aces to put the match away. Daca, one of the nation's best servers, served a pair of aces in the final four points as part of a 5-0 run to finish off the night.
Bella Illig logged a career-best 5 aces to pace Campbell's 12 total aces on the night.
Hannah Pattie and
Lauren Wheeler each reached the 20-assist mark, led by Pattie's 23.
The Camels will look to sweep the weekend in match two against W&M tomorrow at 2p.m. The match will be broadcast on FloCollege.
