RADFORD, Va. – The Camels scored three second-half goals to give Head Coach
Dustin Fonder his 100
th win at the helm in Buies Creek, defeating Radford 3-0 Tuesday night at Cupp Stadium.
Fonder becomes the third coach in program history to surpass the century mark. He joins Derrick Leeson (101 wins, 1991-2001) and Jim Cole (138 wins, 1963-'75). Fonder's winning percentage of .599 at Campbell ranks fourth, but two of those ahead of him coached for six seasons or less. Only Cole's mark of .729 in 13 seasons is ahead of Fonder when factoring longevity.
Including his previous stops, Fonder has accumulated 178 wins in under 19 seasons to average over nine wins a year.
Although the first half was scoreless, Campbell applied plenty of pressure with seven shots, forcing four saves in the opening 45 minutes.
Kristijan Bandur secured the opening goal in the 54
th minute off an assist from
Xander Martin. Multiple Camels linked up in the midfield to spring Martin down the left side. After entering the box, Martin sent a low cross across the face of goal that slipped through the legs of
Skyler Wright and past multiple defenders until it came to the feet of Bandur, who was making his run at the far post to calmly pass it into the back of the net.
Ethan Roberts next put his name on the scorecard with his team-leading fourth goal of the season. He found himself alone on the right side of the box, nearly even with the top of the six-yard box. He sent a looping ball over the goalie's reach and tucked it into the top-left corner from a tight angle.
Sam Roberson scored the final goal of the day in the 88
th minute, his first of the season.
Lotem Ben Dov took a crack from inside the box that was parried by Ben Miller. Miller was unable to secure the ball, and the rebound went right to the feet of Roberson, who buried it into the uncontested net.
On the night, Campbell outshot Radford 19-16, putting 10 of their efforts on goal to RU's two. The Camels created two more corner opportunities (3-1), and Radford was whistled for one more foul (9-8).
