Camels bounce back with win over Pirates

HAMPTON, Va. – Gianni Boone recorded her fifth 20-point game of her career and tied her career high with 21 points to lead the Camels to a 58-43 win over Hampton at the Hampton University Convention Center on Friday night.
 
The Camels built a 10-point lead after the first quarter, led by Boone and N'na Konate. Konate scored the first four points of the game, then Hampton answered with their five points on buckets by Olivia Smith and Kayla Lezama.
 
Konate ended the game with 10 points and a career-high 12 rebounds for her first career double double.
 
Campbell's defense held the Pirates scoreless over the final 4:46 of the first frame, as the offense went on a 10-0 run to build the advantage. Boone scored five points in the quarter, and Ciara Alexander added four points off the bench.
 
Boone also had a strong contribution on the defensive end as the primary defender on Lezama, Hampton's leading scorer. Averaging over 23 points in CAA games, Lezama only managed to score nine points in 34 minutes.
 
The Pirates opened the second quarter with a six-point burst, with Kiki McElrath scoring four on her own.
 
Campbell responded in kind with a 9-0 run of its own over the subsequent three minutes, with five points coming from Boone.
 
Smith knocked down a three pointer for Hampton to cut into the deficit, but the Camels responded once again with a 7-0 run in a minute and a half thanks to Boone and Jasmine Felton. The run gave the Camels a 17-point lead, their largest in the first half.
 
Aisha Dabo scored a jumper in the paint at the 1:20 mark for the final points of the first half, making the score 31-16 in favor of the visiting Camels going into the locker room.
 
Hampton grabbed the momentum to start the third quarter, going on a 10-2 run to cut the lead to seven, 33-26.
 
Over the second half of the third quarter, Campbell went on an 11-2 run to push the lead to 46-30 going into the fourth quarter. Boone had seven points in the frame and tied her previous career high of 21 points with a free throw at the 0:58 mark.
 
Konate scored another four points in the fourth quarter, and Jasmine Nivar added five in the frame to keep the Pirates out of arm's reach for the remainder of the contest, only getting as close as 11.
 
Olivia Tucker ended the game with eight points, and Felton added five.
 
UP NEXT
Campbell is back home for the first time in two weeks to host UNCW at Gore Arena. The game will now be played at 3:00 on Monday the 26th. The action will still be streamed live on FloCollege.
