BUIES CREEK – The Fighting Camels dropped their fifth in a row in an 81-69 setback Thursday night to Stony Brook.
Campbell falls to 9-13, 3-6, while Stony Brook moves to 13-9, 5-4 at the halfway mark of the CAA schedule.
DJ Smith scored 20 points and matched a career-high with 10 rebounds to lead the effort for Campbell. It's the second career double-double for the 6'0" guard.
Tasos Cook led the Camels in the first half with with a trio of three-pointers to put up nine points in the opening 20 minutes. A late stall from Campbell's offense allowed the Seawolves to carry a 41-36 lead into the break.
Campbell started the second half hot thanks to a couple easy buckets along with a pair of threes from Smith to retake the lead. Stony Brook answered with back-to-back threes from Richard Goods to retake a lead they would never surrender. The deficit remained single digits until inside of two minutes to go as the visitors pulled away for the 81-69 win.
Smith paced all scorers with 20, while
Jeremiah Johnson added 15, Newton added 12, and Cook 11.
Stony Brook got 19 points apiece from Andrej Shoshkikj and Erik Pratt among four in double figures for the Seawolves.
While turnovers were nearly even (Campbell 11, Stony Brook 10), Stony Brook capitalized for 18 points from those, doubling Campbell's total of nine points.
The Camels return to action against William & Mary Saturday at noon. That game will be broadcast nationally on CBS Sports Network.
