Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Smith scores 39 in record setting road win

WILLIAMSBURG, VA. – The Fighting Camels got back in the win column with a 104-96 road win at William & Mary Saturday afternoon. The nationally televised game saw a career-high 39 points from DJ Smith lead the Camels to the most points in a road game in program history.

Campbell improves to 10-13, 4-6 in the CAA, while W&M falls to 14-8, 5-5 with their first home loss of the season.

Smith's 39 points tie for the seventh most in the program's D1 history and fourth most on the road, as he's only the third Camels to reach that total. Chris Clemons scored 39+ five times, and Clarence Grier got there once. He's the first to score 39 in a game since Chris Clemons in 2019. His scoring total also marks the third most in Kaplan Arena history.

Campbell came out red-hot and opened up a 25-point lead just 13 minutes into the game, leading the Tribe 42-17. DJ Smith led the early efforts and poured in 25 points in the first half. Campbell scored 57 in the opening 20 minutes to lead 57-40 at the half.

The Camels needed every bit of that lead to hold off a furious charge by William & Mary in the second half, cutting the deficit to just two with 4:24 to play. The Camels had an answer for every Tribe bucket down the stretch with one of their own, including going 6-6 at the foul line in the final 40 seconds to seal the 104-96 win.

Campbell was shorthanded down the stretch with three players fouling out with over six minutes to play. The Camels were whistled for 32 fouls as W&M went 34-43 from the foul line on the day.

Along with Smith, Johnson scored 18, Chris Fields Jr. scored 15, and Cam Gregory added 12. Every Camel that hit the floor scored at least two points.

Dovydas Butka returned to the lineup after missing the last three games and scored just two points, but hauled in eight rebounds and handed out a team-high five assists.

The Camels dished out 16 assists, the second most of the year against a D1 foe, against only 12 turnovers,.

The Tribe had six players finish in double figures, led by 18 from Tunde Vahlberg Fassi.

Campbell returns to action Thursday at home against Drexel. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. on FloCollege.
