Campbell’s defense comes up big late in 63-54 win over William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Fighting Camels used a 12-0 run in the final 3:28 to close out the win 63-54 win over William & Mary Friday night at Kaplan Arena.

The fourth quarter was a war of runs from both teams. After Campbell (14-8, 7-2 CAA) scored the first bucket of the frame, William & Mary (10-9, 3-5) used a 14-0 run to take a three-point lead with 3:53 to play. The Camels showed resiliency and responded with their 12-0 run.

The effort was a mirror of the previous matchup between the two teams, when the Camels held the Tribe scoreless over the final 3:18 of the contest.

Olivia Tucker led all scorers with 16 points, and Cassidy Geddes led the Tribe with 15. The Camels won the rebounding battle by five (34-29), and each team committed over 20 turnovers in a battle between two aggressive defenses.

Both offenses found success in the first quarter, with the Camels holding a slight 21-18 advantage after the first 10 minutes. Campbell shot 54& (6-of-11) in the first frame, led by Tucker's nine points. Alexa Mikeska from the Tribe nearly matched her, scoring seven points in the first.

The Camels made five three pointers in the first quarter, and four different players contributed to the effort.

The second quarter started as a near opposite to the first. The Tribe made one field goal just 14 seconds into the frame, and after only scored on three free throw attempts. Campbell made four free throws in the first half of the quarter and didn't make its first field goal until the 2:01 mark, an and-one conversion by Gianni Boone. Her make spurred on a 7-0 run over the final two minutes to build a 33-23 lead at the break.

Campbell forced nine William & Mary turnovers in the second quarter. The effort continues a trend for the Camels this season of holding opponents to low marks in a quarter. It's the seventh opponent CU has held to five or less points in a single quarter, and the second time the team has done it in CAA play.

The third quarter had similar scoring to the first, as the Tribe won the frame, 17-16. Boone and Natalie Fox led their respective squads with six points each.

Jasmine Felton made the first bucket of the fourth quarter to push the lead to 11, but William & Mary answered with a 14-0 run to take the lead with 3:42 to play. Cassidy Geddes made her first three pointer of the game to cut the Camel lead to two, 51-49, before Monet Dance tied it up with a basket in the lane and then made her first three to take the lead, 54-51.

Tucker ended the scoring drought for Campbell with a three pointer to tie the game back up at 54. That was beginning of the closing run for CU, made up of layups from Felton and Boone and a combined 5-of-6 as a team from the free throw line.
