Campbell beats Hampton for third straight win

BUIES CREEK – Campbell picked up its third straight CAA win and remained undefeated at home with a 86-72 win over Hampton Thursday night. DJ Smith led the way with 26 to pace four Camels in double figures.

Campbell improves to 9-8, 3-1 on the year. The Camels also move to 7-0 inside Gore Arena. Hampton drops to 8-9, 2-2 with the loss.

DJ Smith's 26 points marks his tenth 20-point game of the season.

Campbell, down its starting frontcourt duo of Chris Fields Jr. and Dovydas Butka, got a big lift from the guards, draining 10 threes on the night and shooting 84% on high volume at the foul line. The backcourt combo of DJ Smith and Jeremiah Johnson went a combined 25-27 at the line, leading Campbell to a 32-28 night at the stripe.

Cam Gregory lit it up from three, going 5-7 from distance en route to 17 points.

The Camels hit five of their first eight threes to build a 13-point halftime lead. The Camels were a stellar 16-17 at the line in the first half. Jeremiah Johnson led the Camels with 11 at the half.

Campbell pushed the lead to as many as 25 in the second half, despite Hampton's Michael Eley catching fire. Eley was a one man show, scoring 30 in the second half en route to 43 for the game. Campbell got contributions from up and down the lineup to keep Hampton at bay, with DJ Smith leading the second half efforts with 16.

Eley's 43 are a Gore Arena opponent scoring record, topping Akeem Richmond's (ECU) 37 set in 2014. He was one point shy of the Campbell all-time opponent scoring record.

Campbell forced Hampton into 21 turnovers and capitalize with 26 points off turnovers. Twenty-one turnovers are a season-best for the CU defense.

The Camels now face a three-game road stretch starting with Elon on Saturday night. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. inside the Schar Center.
