BUIES CREEK, N.C. – One day after tying the school record for best 54-hole score,
Benjamin Killingstad of Campbell University has been named Coastal Athletic Association men's golfer of the week.
Killingstad (67-64-66—197, -16) finished as individual runner-up and led Campbell (-32) to the team title at the Elon Phoenix Invitational. In a field that included three CAA rivals, the Camels finished four shots better than host and conference foe Elon (-28). Defending CAA champion UNCW tied for sixth (-15).
A junior from Blommenholm, Norway, Killingstad recorded his best three rounds of the season on the par-71 Donald Ross designed Alamance Country Club. His second-round 64 (-7) matched his best collegiate 18-hole score, which came last spring when he was also runner-up at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate.
This week, Killingstad equaled current PGA TOUR member Jesper Svensson's 16-under par score (65-64-68—197) at the 2018 OBX Intercollegiate as the lowest in school history. He tied for first in the 108-golfer field in par-5 scoring (-9) and T2nd with 18 birdies. Killingstad finished T3 in par-4 scoring (-6) and on the par-3 holes (-1).
In addition to the 54-hole mark, Killingstad's 36-hole total (131) tied for second-lowest in Campbell history.
As a team, the Camels notched their best three 18-hole scores of the year and produced the third-lowest 36- (546) and 54-hole (820) marks in program history. The Camels earned their first title of the season and third trophy in the last seven months by leading the field with 64 birdies and making the second-fewest bogeys (38) in the 17-team field.
Killingstad's honor marked the second-straight CAA weekly award for a Campbell golfer.
Logan Graf earned the recognition on Oct. 7 after his fourth-place finish at the Nemacolin Collegiate Invitational.
The Camels return to action next Sunday and Monday (Oct. 18-19) with the Furman Invitational at the Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, S.C.
