Campbell defeats Hampton 4-3

BUIES CREEK — After taking a season-high 30 shots, Campbell women's soccer defeated Hampton 4-3 on Sunday at Eakes Athletics Complex.

Campbell improves to 5-7-4 and 2-3-2 in CAA play while Hampton falls to 3-12-1 and 0-7 in league play.

Ava Kanaar and Abby Connolly each registered a goal for the second consecutive game. Kanaar tied her career-high with three points in the contest with a goal and assist.

The Camels got on the board in the 9th minute of the match thanks to an own goal from the Pirates to take a 1-0 lead.

Hampton answered just five minutes later to even the score before taking the lead in the 28th minute for a 2-1 score.

Just before the half, Connolly would even things up with her second goal in as many games. The Camels headed into the half with 17 shots to the Pirates six and drew three corners in the frame.

Campbell went on to take the lead courtesy of Ella Wineka off the pass from Ava Kanaar to make it 3-2. Wineka's goal is the first of the season and third of her career.

Ava Kanaar doubled the Camels lead in the 88th minute off the pass from Grace Bannon as the goalkeeper was drawn out from the net. Kanaar's third goal of the season is good for second most on the squad.

The Pirates were awarded a penalty kick after a handball in the box in the 88th minute and converted for the final goal of the match making the final 4-3.

Connolly led the Camels with a season-high 10 shots while  Kanaar took four, each had a pair on goal. Anais van Doesburg tallied two saves in the match as the Camels allowed just one shot in the second half.

Head coach Jeff Gross Quotable
"This time in a season three points are what everyone is striving for and we accomplished that today. The performance left quite a bit to be desired though, and the team knows it. We have to turn our focus to the next match and prepare properly. Roll Humps!"
