Camels get past Dragons, 81-60

BUIES CREEK – Campbell won its second straight with a 81-60 victory over Drexel Thursday night inside Gore Arena. Dovydas Butka led the way with a 26-point, 10-rebound double-double, his eighth of the year.

Campbell improves to 11-13, 5-6 in the CAA, while Drexel drops to 12-12, 6-5 with the loss.

Butka played 33 minutes to come up with 26 & 10, while adding four steals to his line. He shot 9-15 from the floor and 8-10 at the foul line in his best performance from the stripe this year.

Jeremiah Johnson scored 19 and DJ Smith added 16 to help Campbell roll past the league's top-rated defense.

Drexel came out hot and shot 76% from the floor (16-21) to lead by as many as eight in the opening frame. While Campbell's defense didn't force many misses, it did come up with 10 forced turnovers in the opening 20 minutes to help the Camels take nine more shots and ultimately lead by three at the half, 39-36. Johnson led all scorers with 14 points at the half.

Campbell dominated the minutes on either side of the break, going on a 10-2 run in the two minutes before halftime, and a 10-0 run to start the second half, for a 20-2 run in the span of five minutes.

That early second half run gave the Camels a 13-point lead that was never cut back to single digits and grew to as many as 22 with 4:35 to go. The Camel defense was much tighter in the second half, holding the Dragons to 31% after halftime. Campbell outscored the Dragons 42-24 in the second half to cruise to the 81-60 final score.

81 points are the most scored against Drexel in CAA play, as the Dragons entered averaging just 60 points against in league play, a league best. Nineteen turnovers also matches a season for the Dragons, with those leading to 21 points for the Camels.
