Camels secure Opening Day win, 5-2, over Cal Poly

BUIES CREEK — Campbell baseball opened its 2026 campaign with a 5-2 victory over Cal Poly on Friday night at Jim Perry Stadium. 

Campbell (1-0) got on the board in the bottom of the first inning as Jett Music plated Trent Rumley on an RBI sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead. Rumley drew a leadoff walk and stole second before advancing to third on a fly out. 

The Camels doubled its lead in third when Music notched his first hit of the season to score Rumley on an RBI single, making it 2-0.

Cal Poly (0-1) cut into the lead in the sixth, but the Camels answered in the bottom of the frame plating three runs. The offense scored three runs on three hits and a pair of Mustang errors. 

Jonah Oster led off the sixth by reaching on a Mustang error before Joey Morton recorded his first hit of the season to put runners on the corners. Andrew Schuldt and Elijah Clayton each recorded their first RBIs of the season in the inning on a pair of base hits. 

The Mustangs fought back with a run in the eighth and looked for momentum in the ninth with a leadoff single but three straight outs followed for the final score. 

The Camel offense tallied seven hits from seven different batters. Music went 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs while Rumley went 1-for-4 with two runs scored to lead the offense. 

Lleyton Grubich picked up the win in dominate fashion allowing just one run on five hits in 5.2 innings pitched. The left-hander struck out four batters and allowed just one walk in the contest. 

Zach Sabers saw time in relief tossing 2.1 innings allowing one run on two hits and picked up three strikeouts. Music (1) earned his second career save pitching the final inning and picked up his first strikeout of the season. 

Griffin Naess (0-1) suffered the loss for Cal Poly allowing two runs on three hits in five innings of work.

The Camels are set for a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m. at Jim Perry Stadium. Game three of the series will follow 45 minutes after the conclusion of game two. The game is scheduled to be streamed on FloCollege.
