Campbell drops doubleheader to Cal Poly

BUIES CREEK — Campbell baseball dropped its opening series after falling in a pair of contest on Saturday afternoon at Jim Perry Stadium.

Game One (Cal Poly 16, Campbell 5)

Cal Poly (2-1) exploded for five runs in the opening frame for an early advantage. After an RBI single by Braxton Thomas, Ryan Tayman tallied a three-run home run to left field to make it 5-0.

Parker Webb and Owen Simmons entered into relief and settled down the Cal Poly offense through the sixth inning. The duo combined for three shutout innings and allowed just one hit.

Campbell (1-2) got on the board in the first as Jett Music cut into the deficit scoring Jackson Thompson on an RBI groundout. The Camels would continue to respond scoring four more unanswered runs to even things up, 5-5, in the fifth. The Camels scored a pair in the second and one run in the third and fifth frames.

The Mustangs offense continued exploding for three runs in the seventh and continued the offense in the top of the ninth plating eight more runs to make the final score 16-5.

David Rossow (0-1) suffered the loss in his season debut tossing 2.2 innings and allowing five runs on four hits.

Joey Morton collected his first multi-hit performance of the season and led the offense going 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. Jonah Oster also tallied a multi-hit performance going 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored. Logan Chapman and Elijah Clayton each drove in a run.

Cal Poly outhit the Camels by a 14-8 advantage as both left eight runners on base.

Game Two (Cal Poly 4, Campbell 3)

Cal Poly struck again in the opening frame on an RBI groundout and again in the third on an RBI base hit to take an 2-0 lead heading into the fifth.

Campbell knotted things up in the fifth as Trent Rumley and Elijah Clayton tallied back-to-back base hits to put runners on the corners. A Mustang balk advanced the runners up a base scoring Rumley before Carlos Lugo drove in his first career run on an RBI double to deep right field, making it 2-2.

The Mustangs would continue to have an answer taking the lead in the top of the sixth and adding insurance in the ninth for a 4-2 lead heading into the Camel's final at bat.

The Camels looked to claw back into the game when Andrew Keller recorded his first hit of the season to drive in Rumley making it 4-3, but a groundout ended the threat.

Oster led the offense with his second multi-hit performance of the day going 2-for-4.

Cooper Clark suffered the loss working 5.2 innings allowing three runs on six hits and picked up six strikeouts. Camden Wimbish made his Campbell debut in relief allowing one run on one hit and recorded three strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work.
