Camels pick up sixth straight win over East Carolina

BUIES CREEK — Campbell baseball returned to the win column with a 2-1 victory over in-state foe East Carolina on Tuesday night at Jim Perry Stadium.

The win marks the sixth consecutive win over the Pirates and the sixth straight victory by one run.

Campbell (2-2) struck in the opening frame to jump out to an early 1-0 lead. Trent Rumley led off the inning recording a leadoff double down the left field line and advanced on a Pirate miscue before scoring on a passed ball.

Mason Smith settled into the game quickly retiring six of the first eight batters he faced. The right-hander totaled 5.1 innings of work allowing just five hits and picked up five strikeouts in his season debut.

East Carolina (1-3) evened things up in the sixth on an RBI double to right field but a strikeout and ground out ended the threat. The Camels limited the Pirates to just six hits on the night and forced four Pirate errors.

The Camels quickly answered in the bottom of the frame as the top of the order worked the bases loaded before Rumley scored off a Jonah Oster ground ball making it 2-1.

The pitching staff allowed just two hits in the final three frames to keep the Pirates off the board and the 2-1 final score.

Beau Brailey (1-0) would secure his first win as a Camel working 0.2 in relief allowing just one hit. Brailey, Owen Simmons, Braxton Shaffer, and Zach Sabers would combine for 2.1 innings allowing the only run and two hits.

Jett Music (2) earned his second save of the season collecting the final four outs allowing one hit and picking up a pair of strikeouts.

Joesph Webb (0-1) suffered the loss pitching one inning in relief allowing the go ahead run and two walks.

Five different Camels picked up hits in the contest as Rumley led going 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. Rumley continues his hitting streak to four games and Music extends his reached based streak to four.
