BUIES CREEK – Campbell couldn't overcome a tough shooting night in a 62-57 loss to Charleston Sunday night in Buies Creek. Campbell finished just 2-21 from beyond the arc and 34% from the floor.
The loss snaps a three-game win streak and drops Campbell to 12-14, 6-7 in the CAA. Charleston improves to 17-10, 10-4.
Campbell struggled to deal with Charleston's size in the first half, as the 7'2" Christian Reeves logged a double-double in the opening 20 minutes with 12 points and 10 rebounds at the half. Charleston had an 11-0 advantage in second chance points, with Reeves often there to clean up misses. Campbell's offensive woes began early, going 1-10 from downtown in the first, as Campbell trailed 36-28 at the half.
The Camels offense was sharper to begin the second and going on an 18-4 run out of the break and go up by six with 11:54 to go. The Cougars responded with a 10-0 run of their own to regain the lead lead for good. Campbell shot 1-11 from beyond the arc in the second half and stayed stuck trailing by 2-6 points across the final six minutes of the game in the 62-57 final.
Jeremiah Johnson led all Camels in scoring with 16 points, while
Muneer Newton pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds.
Reeves finished with 18 points and 15 rebounds to lead the way for Charleston, while fellow 7-footer Chol Machot added 17 points.
Campbell ultimately outrebounded the Cougars 39-34, but Charleston cashed in their O-boards and finished with a 17-6 advantage in second chance points. The 7-foot duo for Charleston finished with nine combined blocks, turning away many of Campbell's putback opportunities.
The Camels defense was steady and kept the Cougs to shooting 45% for the game, along with forcing 13 total turnovers leading to 15 points.
Campbell returns to action at home Thursday night against William & Mary. Campbell previously won a 104-96 thriller against the Tribe in Williamsburg. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Gore Arena.
