Campbell drops series opener, 13-3, at Troy

Troy, Ala. — Campbell baseball dropped its opening game against Troy, 13-3, in eight innings on Friday night at Riddle-Pace Field.

Campbell falls to 2-3 on the season while Troy improves to 2-4. The two squads worked four scoreless innings before Troy broke through in the fifth and never surrendered the lead.

Troy (2-4) worked a pair of runners on in the first after a leadoff double and hit by pitch but back-to-back strikeouts from Lleyton Grubich ended the threat. Grubich worked a pair of innings allowing just one hit and picked up three strikeouts. He retired six of the nine batters he faced.

Campbell (2-3) looked to take the lead in the fourth after Jackson Thompson walked and Jett Music drew a base hit to put runners on the corners but a put out at home limited the Camels from scoring.

After four scoreless innings, the Trojans broke through with a pair of runs in the fifth to take the lead. A leadoff double followed by a pair of base hits in the inning gave Troy the lead, 2-0.

The Trojans extended the lead 3-0 in the sixth on an RBI sacrifice fly.

Joey Morton led off the seventh with a double off the right field wall before scoring off a double by Andrew Schuldt to cut into the deficit, 3-1. Troy responded quickly in the bottom half of the frame with four runs.

The Camel offense would start to come alive in the eighth scoring two runs on two hits and a Trojan miscue but three straight outs limited the damage.

Trent Rumley led off the eighth frame with a base hit before scoring on a double by Jonah Oster. Joey Morton plated the Camel's final run of the game on an RBI sacrifice fly.

Camden Wimbish (0-1) suffered the loss in relief allowing six runs on six hits in four innings of work.

Jett Music and Trent Rumley extended their reached base streak to five games as three different Camels recorded hits in the contest. Rumley also continued his hitting streak to three games.

The Camel offense posted its fewest hits of the season with five and struck out a season high 13 times.
