Q&A with Joachim Larsen Tegner

Junior All-CAA golfers represented Norway in World Am Team Championship

Junior Joachim Larsen Tegner has compiled the sixth-lowest scoring average (72.6) in Campbell men's golf history.  A 2025 All-CAA golfer, he has represented his native Norway at the Boys level and last fall, traveled to Singapore to compete in the World Amateur Team Championships alongside Michael Mjaaseth (Arizona State) and Emil Herstad (Washington). Campbell Athletics student assistant Jade Potter sat down with Joachim to talk about why he chose Campbell, competing for his country and more.

Question: What's the story behind how you ended up at Campbell from Norway?

Joachim Larsen Tegner: It's an interesting story. me and my roommate (Petter Dale) who was also my roommate in high school as well were having a conversation about going to college and he started talking to Campbell first and then we met the coaches in Scotland.  The assistant coach at the time (Ashley Sease), who didn't know I was from Norway, saw my head over on my driver that was a Pug. She has two pugs, and she loves them, and she came over to see if I had one, and we kept on talking, and she figured out I was from Norway and roommates with Petter.

Q: Growing up in Norway, how did you get into the game of golf?

JLT: My whole family plays golf, and growing up, my dad took me to the golf course. It's funny because my mum and dad met at the golf course, so it was kind of the way it was going.

Q: You've represented Norway internationally at both the Boys level and most recently in the World Amateur team championship. What did that experience mean to you?

JLT: It means a lot to represent my own country, which is really something special and I'm honored to do it and would love to do it in many more events.

Q: What did your preparation look like for an event as big as the WATC compared to a normal tournament?

JLT: I would say the preparations were the same, still trying to play my game and I mean it's a big stage. I didn't want to try and get too high expectations for myself, even though it's a big game, you still want to show your own game. It's just doing what I love.

Q: Was there a moment during the championship that really stood out to you or that you will remember for a long time?

JLT: I think just in the ceremony when they shouted our name representing Norway was very special.

Q: How did this influence your confidence coming back to Campbell?

JLT: I think it just boosted my confidence even more. Representing Norway on the biggest stage is great, and to do that is just going to boost my confidence even more"

Q: How does this shape your long-term goals in golf?

JLT: My long-term goal is to play on the biggest stage, being a part of the PGA Tour and hopefully one day win. I really got a picture of how great the level is even just in amateur golf. The level in college is really good; you can see that as the number one amateur golfer can easily play on the PGA Tour. It's great to see that level in the competition I am playing.

Q: How would you describe Norwegian golf culture compared to college golf in the U.S.?

JLT: It's a bit different; there are a lot (fewer) golfers in Norway and our season is not that long. During the winters we can't hit balls outside. The golfers in the States have a bit of an advantage with that.

Q: What was the biggest adjustment you had to make when you moved from Norway to play college golf in the U.S.?

JLT: The grass is very different, especially more south, that you have to get used to and being part of a team even though you play individually is something to adapt to.

Q: How often do you go back to Norway, and what do you miss the most?

JLT:  I go back to Norway two times a year; for the summer and for Christmas break. The one or two things I miss the most are my family and the food.

Q: What are your personal goals for the season, both individually and as a team?

JLT: I think individually I want to make it to the regionals and as a team, too. I would love to win.
