CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Fighting Camels erased a 10-point fourth quarter deficit and held Charleston to 18% shooting in the frame to come away with a 59-57 win over Charleston Sunday afternoon at TD Arena.
Jasmine Nivar's steal and fastbreak layup with 19 seconds to play capped a 13-5 run and put Campbell ahead for good.
Â
Campbell improved to 18-11 and 11-5 in CAA play, while Charleston dropped to 22-5 (14-2).
Â
Olivia Tucker made two three pointers in the final minutes, and Nivar splashed in one of her own to compliment Campbell's tough defense down the stretch. The Cougars finished the game 0-9 and did not make a field goal in the final 7:55. Five different Camels recorded blocks in the contest to lead to the Cougars shooting a season-low 29%.
Â
By contrast, Campbell shot 42% and made eight three pointers. The squad now sits at 11-1 when shooting above 40% and 12-4 when making more than six from distance. Tucker led the way again with 14 points, and
Jasmine Felton added 12 points and eight rebounds.
Â
The teams started the game in a defensive battle, with the Camels holding a 6-3 lead at the 5:39 mark of the first quarter. Campbell held Charleston to just 1-of-8 shooting in the early going, and Tucker and Felton each knocked down their first three-point attempts.
Â
An and-one from Grace Ezebilo were the final points of the quarter for Charleston. Campbell's defense held the home team to 12% shooting over the first 10 minutes of action, and the Camels led 16-6 after the first quarter. Sophia Tougas's early three was the only make from deep for the Cougars, who ended the contest 1-of-15 from beyond the arc.
Â
Charleston flipped the script and outscored the Camels 19-7 in the second quarter to take a 25-23 lead into halftime. Taryn Barbot opened the frame on a 6-2 run by herself to cut the lead to six. She finished with a game-high 23 points but was the only Charleston player in double figures.
Â
After two scoreless minutes from both teams, Barbot extended her run by shooting 5-of-6 from the free throw line on three consecutive possessions. Campbell made just one field goal in the period but shot 5-of-6 from the charity stripe over the final three and a half minutes to stay within striking distance.
Â
Ciara Alexander made an early impact off the bench for the Camels, scoring seven first-half points on 3-of-3 shooting.
Â
The teams played even through the third quarter, and Felton scored seven points in the frame to pace the Camels. A Tucker long ball put CU ahead with 3:05 left. Charleston ended the quarter with a 10-1 run to enter the fourth with an eight-point advantage.
Â
Charleston extended to 10 with a 6-4 run over the first 2:05 of the fourth. Barbot's jumper at that time was the final field goal converted by the Cougars.
Â
N'na Konate scored four points in the final frame, and she recorded another two blocks today to improve her season total to 43. She is now fifth in program history for blocks in a single season.
Â
Gianni Boone added eight points and six rebounds, and
Hadleigh Dill made all four of her free throw attempts late in the second quarter.
