Campbell beats Hampton with offensive outburst

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Camels defeated Hampton 69-51 in their best offensive performance in a CAA game this season, Thursday night at Gore Arena. It was a conference game-high in points and field goal percentage for Campbell, who improved to 19-11 and 12-5 in CAA play.

The 12 conference wins ties last year's performance for the most in Buies Creek since the 2021-22 season.

Hampton fell to 10-19 (4-13). Olivia Smith led her squad with 11 points and five assists, and Kayla Lezama added 10 points and two steals.

Jasmine Felton led all scorers with 13 points, and Gianni Boone added 11 points, four assists and four steals. In total, nine different Camels lit up the scoreboard. All five starters were above +23 in the plus/minus category.

Campbell began the game with a strong defensive presence. Through the first five minutes, Campbell held Hampton to 1-of-5 shooting and four turnovers. That defensive effort continued throughout the game, with the Pirates shooting just 32% from the field in addition to 12 turnovers. The Camels also outperformed the visitors on the boards, 47-28.

CU's offense came alive in the second quarter, shooting 9-of-12 from the floor and 4-of-5 from beyond the arc to build a 42-17 lead at halftime. Four different players hit a three, and Boone scored 10 points in the frame, outscoring the Pirates by herself.

The Camels continued the defensive pressure in the second quarter, allowing just nine Hampton points. Kiki McElrath had five of those points, but the Pirates shot 3-of-11 from the field and had another five turnovers as they struggled to find a rhythm.

Olivia Tucker and Felton each had two three pointers and eight points in the first half, and the Camels had 18 points in the paint, 13 points off turnovers and nine second chance points to help build the 25-point lead at the break.

CU shot 55% from the field and 60% from beyond the arc in the first half. The 42 points is the highest point total in a half against a DI opponent this season.

Campbell's hot night on offense continued in the third quarter, building to a 32-point lead. Six different Camels scored in the frame, led by Ciara Alexander and Jasmine Nivar with six points apiece.

Hampton was able to make up ground in the fourth quarter, but Campbell's lead was to difficult to overcome in the last 10 minutes.
