AIKEN, S.C. – Campbell delivered the first career head coaching win to
Matt Moot on Tuesday, with a two-stroke victory in the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate.
Benjamin Killingstad finished second and
Joachim Larsen Tegner tied for fourth individually and Campbell concluded the 54-hole tournament 10-under par (278-277-275—830), two shots better than runner-up UAB (832) on the par-70 Palmetto Golf Club layout, the second-oldest golf course in the nation.
Killingstad (70-64-69—203, -7) followed a collegiate career-low 6-under 64 Monday afternoon with a 1-under 69 Tuesday. His birdie on the 306-yard par-four 18th hole sealed the team win for the Camels as well as his best collegiate finish.
Only medalist Ashton Harper (63-68-71—202) of Virginia Tech finished ahead of Killingstad in the 75-golfer field. Host USC Aiken (+1), Mercer (+8) and Virginia Tech (+10) rounded out the top five on the 15-team leaderboard.
"I had five guys this week who were prepared and excited to compete," said Moot, who spent seven seasons as assistant and associate head coach before taking over the head job last summer. "With huge contributions from each of them, this was a complete team win. Watching them hit clutch shots and make the correct decisions coming down the stretch in the heat of contention, was very fulfilling to see. When 830 shots are decided by just a couple at the end of the week, every shot and situation matters, and they approached it that way."
Larsen Tegner wrapped season-low 67s around a 72 Monday afternoon to earn his best finish of the year (67-72-67—206, -4). Fellow junior
Erik Johansson (71-70-70—211, +1) tied for 14th, while red-shirt junior
Logan Graf (70-71-75—216) and freshman
William Sundborn (74-73-69—216) tied for 27th at 6-over. All five Camel golfers played par, or better, golf in at least one round and the Camels combined to shoot 24-under par on the two par-5 holes (No. 10 and 14).
"This is one of the hardest working and most fun teams I have ever been around," said Moot, who has guided his team to four top-3 finishes in its last five outings. "They are mature, kind, and competitive, and it shows in the culture and friendships they've developed. I could not think of a better group of guys or a better place than Campbell to pick up my first tournament win. I can't wait for the next."
Larsen Tegner posted his first 67 in Monday's opening round to help the Camels finish the initial 18 at 2-under par and one shot in front of UAB. Killingstad then delivered two eagles and three birdies in the afternoon to log his 6-under 64 that eclipsed his previous best by four strokes.
On Tuesday, Larsen Tegner played bogey-free golf to pace the Camels with a three-under 67. Killingstad and Sundborn added 69s and Johansson an even-par 70.
A sophomore from Blommenholm, Norway, Killingstad led the field in par-5 scoring (-7) and tied for the lead in eagles (2) with Sundholm. He tied for second in par-4 scoring (-3) and, along with Graf, finished in the event with 13 birdies each (T4).
Larsen Tegner made 39 pars (T2), played the par-3 holes 1-under (T3) and finished with 10 birdies (T14). Sundborn also made 39 pars and tied with Graf for fourth in par-3 scoring (-5). Johansson's solid outing included 38 pars.
Killingstad and the Camels also turned in 18-, 36- and 54-hole marks that rated among the best in program history. Killingstad's second-round 64 is tied for the fourth-lowest single-round score in school Division I era records (since 1983) and his 54-hole tally (203) equals the ninth best total. The team turned in the fourth-lowest 54-hole score (830) and tied the mark of the eighth-best 36-hole total (555).
Campbell returns to action Mar. 27-29 with the Cutter Creek Intercollegiate, hosted by East Carolina at Cutter Creek GC in Snow Hill, N.C.

The Course – Palmetto Golf Club (Par 70, 6617 yards)
The Palmetto Golf Club is the oldest, continually operated 18-hole golf course in its original location in the Southeast and probably the second oldest in the United States, with the Chicago Golf Club being the oldest. Palmetto Golf Club was founded in 1892 by Thomas Hitchcock, who laid out four holes. After the first four holes were constructed, Herbert Leeds laid out the remainder of the initial nine holes. Palmetto was expanded in 1895 to 18 holes with the completion of the second nine holes that had been designed by Leeds and James Mackrell, Palmetto's first golf professional. There is a record of Donald Ross having done some work at Palmetto in 1928. In 1932, Alister MacKenzie, who had completed the Augusta National Golf Club, was asked to draw up plans for converting the Palmetto sand greens to grass and lengthening the course. In 2003, Tom Doak, a recognized authority on Dr. MacKenzie's work, provided recommendations to restore some of the MacKenzie design characteristics on the golf course. This work was completed in 2005 and mainly involved reworking the bunkers and expanding the greens out towards the existing mounds and slopes. Noted golf course architect Gil Hanse is now serving as resident architect for the Club. The golf course is a par 71 layout and plays at 6,695 yards (par 70, 6617 hards for the Palmetto Intercollegiate) from the championship tees. What the course may lack in length it more than makes up for with its small elevated and undulating greens, and clever bunkers.
The Coach: After spending seven seasons as assistant and associate head coach,
Matt Moot is in his first year as head coach at his alma mater. He collected his first collegiate coaching victory in his seventh team event – the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate (Mar. 9-10, 2026). During his time as an assistant or associate on the Camel staff, Moot has helped lead Campbell to five NCAA post-season trips, 12 tournament titles and three conference crowns. Moot helped develop the 2017, 2019 (Jesper Svensson), 2018 (Ray Kraivixien) and 2021 (Pontus Nyholm) Big South Conference golfers of the year as well as four-straight league rookies of the year in
Henric Bjelke (2022), Tim Holmberg (2023),
Erik Johansson (CAA 2024) and
Benjamin Killingstad (CAA 2025). During his playing career (2007-11) at Campbell, Moot compiled 11 top-10 individual finishes and was a two-time Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar. He competed in the 2009 and 2011 NCAA regionals.
