Camel golf teams continue to shine in classroom

Programs have top 2 team GPAs in athletics department

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Not only have the Campbell University men's and women's golf teams established themselves as top-flight competitors on the course, but they truly have represented their institution as student-athletes.

During the 2025-26 academic year, Campbell's women's team combined to post a 3.803 grade-point average, the highest among all 21 Fighting Camel varsity programs.

The men's team was close behind with a 3.753 GPA, the highest mark set by any Fighting Camel men's program in the last decade.

"I am so proud to be associated with the golf teams at Campbell University.  Their performances in the classroom are directly attributable to the goals and expectations of the coaches that recruited each athlete," said Director of Golf and head women's coach John Crooks.  "Coach Patino and Coach Moot were academic award-winning student-athletes when they were in school.  In fact, Matt was a multiyear academic All American.  Great Coaches, great athletes, great golfers, and great students are the traditions at Campbell University.  Roll Humps!"

Not only did the Campbell men win two tournaments during the 2026 spring semester, the Fighting Camels compiled a 3.851 GPA, which also stands as the best semester performance by any of the school's varsity programs since 2015.

All eight players on the Campbell men's roster finished the term with at least a 3.4 GPA, seven had a mark of 3.75 or higher, including Petter Dale, Malik Dao, Logan Graf and Erik Johansson, all of whom posted perfect 4.0 GPAs.

Campbell's men's golf team has produced the department's highest GPA among men's programs in five of the last six – and 10 of the last 12 – semesters.

""Our student-athletes success in the classroom is a reflection of their desire to be elite in everything they do," said head men's coach Matt Moot.  "Academics is a foundation of Campbell Athletics, and we have players who believe in the importance of being exceptional students. This is a big reason why they come here from all over the world. Greg Kuras and our academic resources do a fantastic job in helping our student-athletes reach their goals and provide a superior educational experience at this great University. I believe these results just give an insight into who we truly are as a team and department."

Each of the eight golfers on the women's roster also earned GPAs of 3.0 or higher during the spring semester, while Fanni Gronlund, Izabella Grimbrandt and Linn Svedlund posted perfect 4.0 marks.

"We are so incredibly proud! I'm not at all surprised by this high team GPA; these girls have put in major work all year long," said associate head coach Val Patino.  "Balancing the demands of a golf season while absolutely crushing it in the classroom is not easy, but they make it look effortless.
They are the definition of true student-athletes dedicated on the course, and in the classroom, and just genuinely amazing individuals all around. This recognition is so deserved, and it's a direct reflection of their discipline and heart. I have absolutely no doubt they'll keep that same momentum rolling into next season."

All 16 golfers on the Camel rosters in '25-26 earned CAA Commissioner's Honor Roll status.

In addition, from 2015-25, fifty-seven Campbell golfers were named All-America Scholar by either the Golf Coaches Association of American (GCAA) or Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA), including 2025 honorees Henrik Bjelke, Erik Johansson, Izabella Grimbrandt, Fanni Gronlund, Isabella Hahne and Alicia Olsson.

The 2026 GCAA and WGCA All-America Scholar teams will be announced this summer.

Among those All-America Scholars are four Campbell alumni now competing on either the PGA (Jesper Svensson '19 and Pontus Nyholm '21) or Epson (Anna Nordfors '22 and Tomita Arejola '23) tours.

Since 2015, the Campbell men's and women's programs have combined to win 17 conference titles – 10 team trophies and seven individual crowns.  Campbell's men or women have participated in NCAA post-season play in 16 of the last 17 seasons.
