RALEIGH, N.C. — Campbell baseball secured its second ranked win of the season after scoring seven unanswered runs to defeat No. 14 NC State on Tuesday night at Doak Field at Dail Park.
The win marks the highest ranked win since the Camels defeated sixth-ranked Duke 18-4 in seven innings on April 23, 2024. The Camels have now won four of their last six over the Wolfpack.
Campbell (15-9 ) used five pitchers on the evening as the pitching staff limited the Wolfpack to four hits and tallied 10 strikeouts. The staff did not allow a hit after the fifth inning as
Owen Simmons (2-1) earned the win surrendering just one hit in three scoreless innings.
NC State (18-7) got out to an early 2-0 lead plating a pair of runs across the first three innings on RBI groundouts before the Camels would respond with seven of their own.
Campbell cut into the deficit, 2-1, in the fourth as
Joey Morton dropped a RBI double into right field to score
Joe Simpson who led off the inning with a walk.
Morton would then plate the go-ahead runs in the sixth on his sixth round trip of the season, a three-run shot to right center field.
Carlos Lugo and
Logan Chapman tallied back-to-back infield singles before scoring on the long ball making it 4-2.
The Camels would extend its lead scoring three runs in the seventh making it 7-2.
Jonah Oster stayed hot at the plate with a RBI single through the left side to score Simpson who led off the inning with a walk.
Mike Murphy continued the offense registering an RBI double to score Lugo and Oster.
Lugo picked up a pair of hits for a team-high 10 multi-hit games while Morton tallied his sixth. Murphy extended his hitting streak to 11 games and Lugo rides a 10 game hitting streak. Simpson has now reached base in 18 straight games after drawing three walks.
Connor Hensley earned the start on the mound tossing three innings allowing two runs on two hits and recorded five strikeouts.
Zach Sabers,
Jett Music, and
Beau Brailey combined for three innings in relief allowing just one hit.
