Camels complete comeback against Charleston

BUIES CREEK — Campbell baseball scored seven unanswered in the final three innings to complete the comeback against Charleston, 12-10, on Friday night at Jim Perry Stadium.

Jett Music blasted the go-ahead two-run home run to give the Camels the lead for good in the bottom of the eighth. Music's homer was his sixth of the season as he launched the fifth pitch of the at bat.

The Camels move to 16-9 overall and 9-1 in CAA play while the Cougars fall to 10-15 overall and 5-5 in league action.

Charleston (10-15, 5-5 CAA) got on the board first in the second on an RBI double by Nick Diaz for an early 1-0 lead.

Campbell (16-9, 9-1 CAA) quickly answered in the bottom of the second scoring a trio of runs on three hits. Joey Morton and Jonah Oster led off the inning with back-to-back hits to put runners on the corners before Mike Murphy cut the deficit to one on an RBI base hit. Oster would then score on a wild pitch before Murphy scored on Trent Rumley's first RBI of the game on a sac fly to left.

The Cougars would go on to plate a run in the third and use a five-run fourth inning to make it 7-2 in the middle of the fourth. The Camels scored a pair in the bottom of the frame to get within two as Rumley registers his first hit of the game, a two-run home run to left, making it 7-5.

Charleston continued its momentum in the sixth with the runs but this time the Camels answered with four runs to cut the deficit to one. Rumley led off the inning with a base hit before Joe Simpson homered to left field and Joey Morton scored Carlos Lugo punching the ball through the right side. Logan Chapman scored on a Cougar double play to make it 10-9.

Morton tied things up in the eighth on the fourth pitch he saw to make it 10-10 before Music hit the go-ahead.

The Cougars looked to strike in the ninth with a runner on third base but a strikeout swinging ended the game.

Beau Brailey (4-0) earned the win in relief tossing 1.2 innings allowing just one hit and picking up two strikeouts.

Rumley led the offense after returning to the starting lineup going 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored. He was a triple away from the cycle.

Morton went 3-for-5 with two RBI to pick up his sixth multi-hit performance and tie his season-high three hits. Simpson went 1-for-2 including two RBI, a run scored, and four walks. Oster picked up his ninth multi-hit performance of the season after going 2-for-5.
