SNOW HILL, N.C. –
Joachim Larsen Tegner was the individual runner-up, and Campbell shared the team title with Elon after Sunday's final round of the Cutter Creek Intercollegiate.
A junior from Lier, Norway, Larsen Tegner produced his best collegiate finish and completed the 54-hole event at 7-under par 209 (67-72-70). William Carr of Elon made a 20-foot birdie putt on the par-five 18th hole to win the individual title at 8-under (72-71-65—208) and draw the Phoenix (275-302-278—855) level with the Camels (276-297-282—855) atop the team leader board at 9-under.
Co-host East Carolina was third at seven-under, while Harvard (+10) and Fairleigh Dickinson (+14) rounded out the top five in the 14-team field.
Campbell junior
Erik Johansson (66-74-70—210) matched his season-best finish (T3) and sophomore
Benjamin Killingstad completed the event in 11th place (71-73-71—215). Freshman William Sunborn moved up 10 spots Sunday and finished T24 (72-78-71—221), while
Logan Graf (78-79-78—235) and
Adrian Bergqvist (77-80-78—235) tied for 74th.
Sunday's result marked the second-straight first-place finish for the Camels, who won the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate earlier this month.
"They're maturing, getting some experience, and getting some confidence under their belt," said first-year Campbell head coach
Matt Moot. "The more we get contributions from everyone in the lineup, the better we'll be. We're getting better, and better. The spring semester has been encouraging, and I think our best golf is ahead of us."
As a team, the Camels led the field in par-3 scoring (+9), finished second with 201 pars and fourth with 51 birdies. Johansson made 14 birdies, tied for second in the field, while Larsen Tegner was fourth in 13 birdies.
Campbell entered the event ranked No. 104 in the nation, defended its Cutter Creek Intercollegiate team title and played No. 70 Elon stroke for stroke by competing in different weather conditions each day. After a nearly-perfect day in the upper 80s Friday that produced 23 rounds under par, the elements changed and the golfers endured cold, overcast, gusty conditions Saturday. The winds continued to play a factor in the event Sunday when a strong head wind prevented many players from attempting to reach the 575-yard par-five 18th hole in two shots.
Campbell returns to action Apr. 11-12 with the Tar Heel Intercollegiate hosted by North Carolina at UNC Finley GC in Chapel Hill.
