Camels open CAA play with win over William & Mary, 9-2

BUIES CREEK — Campbell baseball picked up its first league win, 9-2, over William & Mary on Friday night at Jim Perry Stadium.

The Camels move to 1-0 in the CAA and 5-7 overall while the Tribe falls to 0-1 and 5-6 overall. The win marks the second consecutive CAA opening victory for the Camels since it entered the conference three seasons ago. The Camels also improve to 4-3 in league play against the Tribe.

Camden Wimbish and Connor Hensley (1-0) were stellar on the mound combining for nine innings allowing two runs on four hits. Hensley earned his first victory as a Camel and picked up a season high nine strikeouts. The duo combined allowed just one extra base hit and struck out 13 Tribe batters.

Campbell (5-7) quickly jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second frame as Andrew Schuldt cleared the bases with a grand slam. The home run marks the first of the season for Schuldt and his third career grand slam. Carlos Lugo and Jett Music tallied back-to-back base hits before Logan Chapman walked to load the bases.

William & Mary (5-6) cut into the lead in the fourth with a pair of runs. After a leadoff hit by pitch Matthew Kosuda tallied a RBI double followed by a sacrifice fly off the bat of Charlie Iriotakis.

The Camels kept the offense going in the sixth scoring two runs on two hits. Music registered a two-RBI single to score Joey Morton and Lugo. Morton led off the inning with a five-pitch walk before Lugo tallied his second hit of the game.

Joey Morton extended the lead to five in the seventh on a RBI sacrifice fly to score pinch runner Elijah Clayton, making it 7-2. Clayton then drove in a pair runs on an RBI base hit in the eighth for the final score, 9-2.

Lugo and Music led the offense going 2-for-4 and 2-for-3, respectively, and combined to score four of the Camels runs. Schuldt drove in a season-high four runs after blasting the team's 10th home run of the season.
