Campbell sweeps series with William & Mary, 8-5

BUIES CREEK — Campbell baseball completed a three-game series sweep over William & Mary with a come from behind victory, 8-5, on Sunday afternoon.

Campbell moves to 3-0 in CAA play and 7-7 overall while William & Mary drops to 0-3 league action and 5-8 overall.

With the three-game sweep, Campbell picks up its first since the 2024 season when it swept Valparaiso in Buies Creek March 15-17.

William & Mary (5-8, 0-3 CAA) posted a pair of runs in the first and second inning for an early 4-0 advantage. Matthew Kosuda put the Tribe on the board with a two-run home run in the first before Jamie Laskofski ripped an 2-RBI double to right center to extend the lead in the second.

Campbell (7-7, 3-0 CAA) cut into the deficit in the third as Andrew Keller tallied his second RBI of the season to score Mike Murphy who led off the inning with a base hit.

The Camels continued to answer scoring four runs on three hits in the fourth to take the lead, 5-4, and never surrender. Nik Sanders got things going offensively recording a double to left center before Murphy drew a seven-pitch walk to put runners on. Joe Simpson put the Camels within two an RBI single to center.

Joey Morton blasted his second home run of the season, a three-run shot, to give the Camels the lead in the fourth, 5-4.

Simpson registered his second RBI of the game on a bunt single to score Elijah Clayton who reached on a base hit in the sixth to extend the lead. The Camels added insurance in the seventh on a Tribe error and Clayton RBI double.

The Tribe would look to answer in the ninth on a solo home run but a quick fly out and ground out limited the damage for the final, 8-5.

Simpson tallied five stolen bases in the contest tying the single game program record. He went 2-for-2 including two runs batted in, three walks, and a run scored. Campbell swiped a total of nine bases in the game, which marks the most since March 8, 2023 when it swiped the same against Tulane.

Sanders and Clayton each registered their first multi-hit performance of the season to lead the offense. Sanders tallied two doubles and a run scored while Clayton added a run scored.

Owen Simmons earned his first win of the season working three innings allowing no runs and no hits. The right-hander picked up three strikeouts and did not allow a walk. Jett Music (3) earned the save in relief allowing one run on one hit in 2.1 innings.
