Campbell takes series over UNCW

BUIES CREEK — Campbell baseball claimed its sixth conference series with a 7-5 victory over UNCW on Sunday afternoon at Jim Perry Stadium.

Campbell improves to 23-12 overall and an impressive 16-2 in CAA action while UNCW drops to 20-15 and 9-6 in league play.

After giving up five runs over the first two innings, the Campbell bullpen settled in and allowed just two hits over the final seven innings.

Zach Sabers (1-2) picked up his first win on the season in relief working 4.0 scoreless innings allowing just two hits and picking up four strikeouts.

Braxton Shaffer earned his first save on the season tossing the final two innings not allowing a hit and collecting two strikeouts.

UNCW (20-15, 9-6 CAA) opened the scoring in the top of the first inning plating two runs on a trio of hits.

Campbell (23-12, 16-2 CAA) quickly responded to even things up in the bottom of the opening frame as a bases loaded fielder's choice plated a run followed by a error on the same play.

The Seahawks offense would continue in the second with a solo home run before a pair of runs scored on a Camel throwing error later in the inning.

The Camels got back within one in the bottom of the second as Trent Rumley tallied an RBI double to right field to score a pair. Darnell Parker Jr was hit by a pitch and Lukas Schramm drew a walk to put runners on before making it 5-4.

Campbell tallied on another run in the fifth on a Jonah Oster sacrifice fly in foul territory to score Rumley from third.

The offensive momentum continued in the sixth as Rumley added insurance on a wild pitch and Mike Murphy registered an sacrifice fly to make it 7-5.

The Camels collected just three hits in the contest and drew 10 walks. Rumley led the offense going 1-for-2 with two runs scored, two RBI, and three walks.
