Camels sweep doubleheader on Saturday

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. — Campbell baseball (36-14) picked up two wins on Saturday against Gardner-Webb 11-9 and Bradley 14-3 (7) at Bill Masters Field at John Henry Moss. 

The Camels were down 9-8 heading into the last inning against the Runnin' Bulldogs before scoring three runs in the ninth to come from behind before dominating Bradley all around to secure the wins. 

GAME ONE | Campbell 11, Gardner-Webb 9 

Campbell jumped on the board early in the first after Joey Morton tallied an RBI base hit to make it 1-0. Jett Music led off the game with a double before scoring on the play. 

Gardner-Webb took the lead in the fourth plating three runs on just one hit making it 3-1. 

The Camels regained the lead in the sixth scoring four runs on four hits and a Runnin' Bulldogs miscue. Jonah Oster and Morton led off with back-to-back base hits before scoring on a Lukas Schramm base hit and the miscue. Music continued the scoring with a two-RBI double to left to make it 5-3. 

Gardner-Webb tallied four consecutive hits including a trio of doubles to take the lead 6-5. 

In the seventh, Campbell once again struck with three runs taking the lead back 8-6. Morton collected a base hit before scoring on Logan Chapman's RBI triple. Chapman then scored on an RBI double from Lukas Schramm and Logen Sutton tallied his first hit, the go-ahead RBI base hit. 

Gardner-Webb tallied a three-run home run in the eighth inning making it 9-8 and giving the Camels three outs to work with in the ninth. 

The Camels answered with a trio of runs in the ninth to regain the lead for good. Schramm led off the inning with a walk and Mike Murphy reached on a fielder's choice to put a pair of runners on. Andrew Schuldt doubled to left to tie things up before Sutton and Music registered back-to-back sacrifice flies. 

Music and Morton led the offense each going 3-for-5 and combined for five RBI. 

Campbell used five pitchers in the contest as Music (2-1) earned the win in relief and Braxton Shaffer (2) earned the save. David Rossow earned the start on the mound going 5.0 innings allowing three runs on one hit and picking up eight strikeouts. 

GAME TWO | Bradley 3, Campbell 14 (7)

Campbell quickly jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opening frame after collecting five hits. The Camels tallied four consecutive hits off the bats of Lugo, Oster, Morton, and Chapman to score two runs before Mike Murphy blasted his third homer of the season, a two-run opposite field homer. 

The Camels' bats continued to stay hot scoring three runs in the second and third innings. Morton blasted his 16th homer of the year to plate Lugo before Murphy laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Chapman in the second. In the third, Oster and Morton tallied back-to-back RBI hits before Schramm doubled to for the final run of the inning. 

Jarrett Martin entered in the fifth to pinch hit with runners in scoring position before tallying an RBI groundout to extend the lead. Jackson Thompson recorded a sacrifice fly to add the second run of the inning making it 13-0. 

Bradley scored a pair of unearned runs in the sixth on a throwing error on the Camels' infield and secured another in the seventh on a solo home run. 

Lugo tallied his sixth homer of the season, a solo shot to right field for the final run of the game. 

Zach Sabers (4-2) picked up the win on the mound in 3.2 innings of work allowing two unearned runs and picking up three strikeouts. Connor Hensley earned the start and Gabriel Cruz pitched the final 1.1 innings. 

Morton and Lugo each went 3-for-3 and combined for six runs scored and six runs driven in. Aaron Smigelski picked up his first career hit as a Camel and added another going 2-for-2.
