DURHAM, N.C. – The Fighting Camels were unable to bounce back from a first-half deficit, as they dropped the season opener against Cal Baptist, 2-0, Thursday afternoon at Freeman Field at Koskinen Stadium.
The Lancers (1-0) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 23
rd minute, as Blake D'Agostino converted a penalty kick. Cal Baptist pushed the lead to two shortly before halftime, when Liam Baptist Jones slotted it home from the box off assists by Drew Hardin and Nicholas Coope in the 44
th minute.
Andrey Mora recorded the lone shot on goal in the first half for Campbell (0-1), forcing the opposing keeper to push the effort over the bar in the 30
th minute.
Neither team found the back of the net in the second half, as the Lancers held on to the two-goal advantage for the season-opening win.
Xander Martin put the second shot on goal for the Camels, doing so in the 88
th minute.
David Skorodumov recorded four saves in goal in his first action for the Camels. Cal Baptist held the advantage in shots, 14-6, and corners, 6-5. The Camels were whistled for 15 fouls to CBU's 10, but the Lancers were shown two yellow cards to Campbel's one.
