ELON, N.C. — Campbell women's soccer fell 2-0 to defending Coastal Athletic Association champions Elon in its conference opener on Sunday night at Rudd Field.
The Camels move to 3-5-2 (0-1 CAA) on the season while Elon improves to 6-1-2 (1-0 CAA).
The two squads played to a defensive battle in the first as Campbell held Elon to just six shots while only
Laney Heafner and
Abby Connolly registered shots for the Camels to go into the half scoreless. The Camels did take three corners to Elon's one.
Elon broke through in the 57th minute off a set piece as Megan Dwyer found the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead. The Camels looked to quickly respond just over a minute late but a handball was called in the box.
The Phoenix sealed the game in the 89th minute to double its lead. Gabby Tirado intercepted a pass before driving towards the goal and passing it off to Jess Beck to put in the back of the net.
The Camels created four opportunities in the second half and registered three corners but couldn't convert on the attempts. Campbell totaled six shots and led with six corners on the night and was held scoreless for just the third time this season.
