BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Fighting Camels earned their first points of the season, coming away with a 0-0 draw against Winthrop on a rainy, weather-delayed Tuesday evening at Eakes Athletics Complex.
The visiting Eagles (4-3-1) put up eight shots in the first half to Campbell's two (0-7-1), but freshman goalkeeper
Caiden Lee held the efforts at bay for the first 45 minutes.
Shortly after the halftime whistle, lightning moved through the area. The second half began just after 8:10 p.m. following a 75-minute delay.
The rainy conditions helped create havoc in the second half, with much of the possession being battled in the middle third. Campbell was able to create more chances, recording four shots against Winthrop's three in the second 45.
The Camels had two shots on goal in the final six minutes off the boots of
Xander Naguib and
Adam Granai, but the home team was unable to find the late winner.
Lee, a true freshman from Holly Springs, recorded five saves in his collegiate debut, highlighted by a heel save in the 76
th minute to deny Jorge Perez.
Jayco Castro led the offensive effort with three shots, putting one on frame. Winthrop had five players to each record one shot on goal, while Perez and Daniel Restrepo had two shots apiece.
