ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- UNC Asheville senior guard Andre Smith just missed a triple double by one rebound as the Bulldogs edged Campbell in overtime, 99-89 at the Justice Center Saturday night.
Smith scored 24 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had nine assists as Asheville ended an eight-game losing streak to the Camels over the past 10 years. The win evened the Bulldogs' record to 3-3, while the Camels fell to 2-3. Three of the last four games the teams have played have gone into overtime.
"We got the job done in overtime," commented UNC Asheville coach Eddie Biedenbach. "We've got to get a little tougher than we were tonight. We made some turnovers in the first half that allowed them to get back in the game."
UNCA was 22-of-27 from the line and 9-of-10 from the charity stripe in overtime as the Camels fell to 0-3 away from Carter Gym this year.
"We just couldn't stop Asheville on offense," said Campbell coach Billy Lee. "I'm proud of the way we fought back and almost won the game but we just couldn't stop them. They're (UNCA) a good team that has a lot of different guys who can score. And Andre Smith is really a great player. He was tremendous tonight."
Campbell was led by Tarick Johnson's career-high 28 points, while center Jonte' Edwards had a double-double with 24 points and tied his career-high in rebounds with 14. Guard Brooks Lee added 11 points and nine assists for the visitors.
UNCA had four others in double figures. Alex Kragel contributed 17 points for the Bulldogs, including a crucial three-pointer in overtime. Sophomore forward Bryan McCullough chipped in 15 points. Senior center Ben McGonagil had 11 points and 11 rebounds, followed by Joseph Barber with 10 points.
The Bulldogs made six of their first seven shots on the game, led by as many as 14 points in the first half and by 13 in the second half. UNCA hit 52 percent of its shots in the first half, but the Camels held the Bulldogs to 37 percent shooting in the second period. Campbell shot 50 percent (34-68) for the game.
CU cut the gap to 44-37 at halftime, then Edwards had 17 of his points and 10 rebounds in the second period. Johnson scored 13 points in the last 20 minutes of regulation.
Johnson led a 13-3 Campbell run and tied the game at 73-73 on a layup with 1:42 left. A free throw from McGonagil and two free throws from Smith pushed the Dogs in front, 76-73 with 58 seconds left. But Johnson nailed a three-pointer to tie the game at 76-76. Two free throws from Smith at the 29-second mark put Asheville up 78-76, but Johnson hit another bucket to tie the game at 78-78 with 20 seconds left.
Each team had a chance to win at the end of regulation. McGonagil missed a 10-footer with 10 seconds left and Campbell had a chance to win at the buzzer but Johnson's 12-footer bounced off the rim as the buzzer sounded.
In overtime, after Campbell had taken its first lead of the game, a three-pointer from McCullough at the 3:51 mark put the Bulldogs in front for good at 83-81. The Camels were within 91-88 with one minute remaining but Kragel sank a huge three-pointer from the right corner to give Asheville a 94-88 lead with 51 seconds left. The Bulldogs went 5-of-6 from the free throw line the rest of the way.
UNCA went 5-for-5 from the field in the extra period, including a pair of triples, and sank 9-of-10 from the foul line. Campbell was 3-of-7 from the floor (0-for-4 from 3-point range) and just 5-of-9 from the stripe in overtime.
Asheville held a 43-34 edge on the boards.
Campbell hosts High Point on Tuesday at 8:15 p.m. in the second game of a double-header at Carter Gym. The Lady Camels entertain Radford at 5:45 p.m.
