Hot-Shooting Campbell Pulls Away From High
Point 99-80
BUIES
CREEK, N.C. Campbell used a 13-4 run early in the second
half to break open a close game and pulled away from High Point
99-80 in men's basketball action on Tuesday night at Carter
Gym.
Campbell
led 47-45 at the break after a first half where the game was tied
13 times and the lead changed hands on six occasions. The Camels
then shot 65.5 percent (19-29) from the floor in the final period
to post their highest scoring output since a 114-62 victory over
Ferrum on Jan. 3, 1994.
Tarick
Johnson led the Camels with 22 points and eight rebounds, followed
by Brooks Lee's season-high 21 points (6-of-10 threes), plus seven
assists. Jonte' Edwards added 20 points, six rebounds and a
career-high five assists, while Dominique Klein came off the bench
to score 16 points, including 4-of-5 threes, and deal four
assists.
Danny
Gaithings topped High Point (2-5), which dropped its fifth-straight
game, with 25 points on 12-of-16 shooting, and 11 rebounds. Joe
Knight added 21 points for the Panthers to follow his 40-point
effort on Saturday at Vanderbilt.
Campbell
put together its best two offensive halves of the season, including
a 52-point second stanza, and shot 62 percent (36-58) from the
floor, including 11-of-22 from long range. The Camels also produced
a season-high 30 assists off their 36 field goals and made just 11
turnovers.
Johnson
finished the night shooting 8-of-10 from the floor, while Lee was
7-of-11 from the field and Edwards made 8-of-13 shots. Klein canned
6-of-7 buckets.
After
hitting 52.8 percent (19-36) from the field in the opening period,
High Point connected on only 39 percent (11-28) of its tries in the
second period.
Gaithings'
bucket pulled the Panthers within 55-54 with just over 15 minutes
to play, but Campbell stretched the advantage with a 29-11 flurry
over the next 10 minutes. Consecutive treys by Lee, who played at
High Point from 1998-00, and Klein opened the burst and Lee's
triple with 5:54 remaining gave the Camels their largest lead of
the game at 84-65.
High
Point held a 41-28 advantage on the boards, including 18 offensive
rebounds, but the Panthers made just 3-of-14 from long range.
Campbell
(3-3), which ended a two-game slide, returns to action on Saturday
when the Fighting Camels host East Carolina in a 5:00 p.m. contest
at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville. High Point travels to
Washington State for a 7:00 p.m. PST tap on Saturday. [Box Score]
