South Carolina Tops Campbell 77-48
COLUMBIA, S.C. --
Carlos Powell scored 18 points to lead South Carolina to a 77-48
victory over Campbell on Saturday night.
The Gamecocks got off
to its best start since 1988-89. Michael Boynton hit two
3-pointers to help fuel a 23-5 run over a nine-minute span in the
first half. After a timeout, Boynton fed Kerbrell Brown for a layup
and then converted a Campbell turnover into a 3-pointer of his own
to start the run.
USC (6-0) held
Campbell scoreless for five minutes en route to grabbing a 39-23
lead on two free throws by Tre Kelley, who was starting for injured
Josh Gonner.
After Colin Hunt scored in the paint with 7:32 left in the
first half, the Camels trailed 21-20, but did not score again until
Anthony Atkinson's bucket with 2:30 to go in the half that ended a
10-0 USC flurry.
Campbell (0-3), which
has now lost 19 straight road games, led 18-16 with 9:34 remaining
in the first half. Campbell never got closer than 13 in the second
half.
Tarence Kinsey scored
12 of his 14 points in the first half, while Brown added 12 and
Kelley had 10.
Anthony Atkinson scored nine
points to lead Campbell, which hosts UNC Wilmington on Monday at
7:00 p.m. [Boxscore]
