Coastal Carolina Defeats
Campbell 84-55
CONWAY,
S.C. E.J. Gallup scored 17 points and Coastal Carolina
defeated Campbell 84-55 on Saturday night in men's basketball
action at Kimbel Arena.
The
Chanticleers broke out to a 12-2 lead and never trailed while
shooting 54 percent (30-56) from the floor and canning 10-of-21
three-pointers on the night. Campbell shot 33 percent for the game
and just 28 percent in the first period.
The
Fighting Camels (0-8) fell to 0-4 on the road this year and lost
their 21st-consecutive road game. Coastal Carolina (4-4) won its
fourth-straight game and improved to 3-1 at home at Kimbel Gym.
In
the 31st meeting between the schools, the home team won for the
sixth year in a row.
Alvin
Green and Pele Paelay added 11 points each for Coastal, which had
17 steals and forced 21 Campbell turnovers. The Chanticleers turned
those 21 miscues into 27 points.
Diego
Aguiar and Corey Parker led Campbell with 10 points each. Lee Marsh
came off the bench to score a career-high nine points, while
grabbing a team- high seven rebounds.
The
Chanticleers led by as many as 31 points in the first half, thanks
to 58 percent shooting (18-31), including 7-of-11 from 3-point
range. Coastal also converted 13 Campbell first-half turnovers into
15 points.
Campbell
shot just 28 percent (7-25) from the field in the opening period
and trailed 53-24 at the break. Colin Hunt, who scored 26 points on
12-of-14 shooting on Wednesday against Florida Atlantic, finished
0-for-6 from the field in his first career start.
Campbell
senior Tarick Johnson, who entered the game as the team's second-
leading scorer at 11.0 points per game, did not play after
suffering a gash on his left hand in practice on Friday. Johnson
suffered the cut when he accidentally hit teammate Lee Marsh in the
mouth. Marsh sustained a broken tooth that was subsequently
repaired.
Campbell's
last road victory came on Jan. 19, 2002 in an 84-79 decision at
Jacksonville State.
The
Fighting Camels return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 30 at William
& Mary in a 7:00 p.m. tip-off. [Box Score]
