Campbell Ends Season
With 106-56 Loss at UCF
ORLANDO, FLA.
Dexter Lyons scored a career-high 33 points in his final home game
and UCF rolled to a 106-56 win over Campbell in A-Sun men's
basketball action on Saturday night at UCF Arena.
Seniors Rob Ross (19)
and Josh Bodden (13) also hit double digits, while senior Roberto
Morentin added nine points.
UCF shot 62 percent
from the floor on the night (39-63) and hit a school record 16
threes in 31 attempts (.516). Campbell shot just 38 percent from
the field and committed a season-high 25 turnovers, which UCF
turned into 33 points.
Anthony Atkinson,
Diego Aguiar and Russ Gibson scored nine points each to lead
Campbell.
Lyons scored 20 first
half points and UCF led 62-25 at the break. UCF's 62 first half
points were the most scored in the opening period against the
Camels in CU's Division I era (since '77-78).
The Golden Knight lead
reached 59 points before the Camels outscored the hosts 11-2 to end
the game.
UCF, ranked 13th in
this week's CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll, scored the
game's first 10 points and jumped to an 18-2 lead in the first 3:36
of the game on the strength of four treys, plus Josh Bodden's
three-point play.
UCF (22-5, 17-3),
which finished the 2003-04 campaign with 12 wins in 13 homes games,
shot 63 percent from the field (22-35) in the opening half,
including 11-19 (.579) from 3-point range. The Golden Knights
turned 13 Campbell first half turnovers into 23 points.
Campbell (3-24, 3-17)
has lost 32-straight road games, dating to an 84-79 win at
Jacksonville State on Jan. 19, 2002.
The game marked the
final contest for Campbell's Derek Gray and Brad McKeiver. Senior
Tarick Johnson did not make the two-game road trip due to an
illness in his extended family.
UCF carries the second
seed into Thursday's quarterfinal round of the eight-team Atlantic
Sun Championship tournament at Nashville, Tenn. Campbell did not
qualify for the tourney. [Box Score]
